Brian Johnston Memorial Trust Awards Panel Meeting


The BJMT Awards Panel met on 23 April 2009.  Neil Durden-Smith (Chairman), Pauline and Barry Johnston, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, Nigel Seale, Jo Rice, Tony Aston and Richard Anstey were joined by John Hooper, Chairman of The Lord's Taverners, Matthew Patten Chief Executive of The Lord’s Taverners and David Graveney and David Parsons from the ECB.

ECB Recommended Scholars


On the recommendation of the various County Academy Directors and supported by David Graveney ECB National Performance Manager, scholarships of £500 each were awarded to the following boys and girls:

Paul Best (Warwickshire Academy)
18 years old. Slow Left Arm Bowler and Left Hand Batsman.  Captain of the U19 and U17 County teams in 2008 and member if England U17s Elite Player Development Squad.

Dominic Harvey (Nottinghamshire)
16 years old, has played for Nottinghamshire County Age Group for 5 years. Right hand batsman and seam bowler.

Brett Hutton (Nottinghamshire)
16 years old. Right hand batsman and medium/fast bowler. Represented his county and regional side for three seasons and due to attend an England U19 training assessment week for 2012 World Cup. Last season he opened the batting for his local club and took his first senior hat trick at 15.

Kate Randall (Somerset)
16 years old, plays for Somerset U17.  Off spin bowler and right hand bat. She has been selected for the Woman’s England U19 squad in 2009.

Peter Burgoyne (Derbyshire)
15 years old, plays for Derbyshire CC Mini Academy.  Right hand batsman.  He plays for the above year group at county and academy level.

Shiv Thakor (Leicestershire)

Alex Kidd (Oxfordshire)
17 years old. Opening fast bowler and right hand batsman. Last season was recommended to the U17 County Squad but couldn’t join due to injury.  According to the Cricket Development manager it is likely he will join the squad this year.

Alexander Knights (Cornwall)
15 years old.  Cornwall cricket academy.  Right hand batsman and fast bowler.  Described by his coach as a strong opening bowler whose strengths are in swinging the ball away from a right hand batsman.

Jack Creswell (Gloucestershire)
Plays for Gloucestershire Academy for last two seasons.  In 2008 he was chosen to represent the South West of England in the Regional Festival. 

Craig Miles (Gloucestershire)
14 years old. Plays for Gloucestershire Academy and at only 13 years old he represented the County Second XI against Glamorgan.

Elizabeth MacGregor (Essex)
16 years old.  Plays for Graham Gooch Essex Cricket Academy and was awarded U15 Player of the Season in 2008.  She is a left hand batsman and Left Arm Seam Bowler.

Benjamin Foakes (Essex)
16 years old.  Plays for Graham Gooch Essex Cricket Academy as a high quality wicket keeper and right hand batsman.  He was awarded U15 player of the season last year and the most valuable player of the season over all age groups.

Sam Arthurton (Essex)
17 years old.  Plays for Graham Gooch Essex Cricket Academy, as a right hand batsman.

Jack Edwards (Midlands)
15 years old.  Plays for Worcestershire. Left arm seamer and left hand batsman for Midlands U15 squad. 

Alex Mason (Midlands)
16 years old.  Plays for Worcestershire.  Right arm seamer and Right hand batsman.

Sam Kelsall (Nottingham)
Plays for 2nd XI regional team and represented Nottingham 1st XI against Leicestershire last season.  Last season he won the Sir Jack Hobbs award for the most promising U16 Cricket.

Sam Wood (Nottingham)
Plays for 2nd XI regional team and represented Nottingham 1st against Leicestershire last season. 

Matthew Thompson (Devon)
17 years old has played for Devon for 8 seasons.  Left Hand opening batsman with the Devon U16s he won at the Isle of Wight festival.  Last season as a wicket keeper he caught 13 and stumped 2 out which is the most ever in Devon at his age group.  He has his level 2 coaching award.
