ICAP, the world’s premier interdealer broker, raised £11.5 million worldwide on its 17th annual Charity Day on Wednesday 9 December to help support over 120 charities around the world, including The Lord’s Taverners. The sum beat the £11 million raised in 2008 and brought the total raised to £64.5 million since 1993.
ICAP’s support for The Lord’s Taverners will enable 1,200 young people with profound physical and learning disabilities to access Table Cricket as part of The Lord’s Taverners Disability Sports Appeal.
ICAP hosted dozens of celebrity spokespeople from the various charities it gave to this year, including Kevin Spacey, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Kelly Brook, Lawrence Dallaglio, Sir Trevor Brooking, former US President Bill Clinton and Jack Nicklaus.
In London, Judith Chalmers, Ricky Groves, Colin Salmon and Chris Tarrant represented The Lord’s Taverners. Chris’s rendition of the Dire Straits classic, Money for Nothing, will live long in the memory of the traders, as will Ricky singing ‘Baggy Trousers’ by Madness and Colin taking on Nat King Cole. Not to be outdone, Judith took to the phones and helped broker deals including one worth an incredible AUS $350,000,000.
Michael Spencer, Chief Executive Officer of ICAP, said: “To be able to raise £11.5 million for charity in one day in the current environment is an incredible achievement for the financial services industry. Funds raised through the support of our customers, staff, the charities and their patrons will help over 120 worthy causes globally this year.”
Matthew Patten, Chief Executive of The Lord’s Taverners, said, “To be young and disabled means that your chances of playing sport are almost zero. ICAP’s support will enable The Lord’s Taverners to give even more disadvantaged young people a sporting chance by accessing one of the few team sports available to them, Table Cricket. We are hugely grateful to our dedicated celebrity supporters who attended on Wednesday.”
ICAP has supported more than 820 charities since Charity Day was started in 1993. A full list of the charities ICAP supported this year as well as more information about how ICAP's donation will make a difference to the many lives receiving this aid can be found at www.icapcharityday.com
