Girls from across the UK travelled to Ellesmere College, Shropshire last week (24 August) to take part in The Lady Taverners Girls’ Under 13 and Under 15 National Outdoor Cricket Competitions, where North London CC and Freeland CC were crowned 2011 national champions.

Schools from across the UK competed in a series of five regional heats to reach the national finals. During this 8-a-side, 10 over a-side competition, the girls from North London defeated Walmley (Warwickshire), Finchampstead (Berkshire) and Penrith (Cumbria), before winning their final game against Newport (Wales) by 21 runs to confirm their title of under 13 national champions.

Freeland (Oxfordshire) won two very close games in the under 15 finals, firstly against Lowerhouse (Burnley) and then Moseley (Warwickshire), were defeated by eight runs and seven runs respectively, before comfortably winning their third and final game against Bells Yew Green (Sussex) by 28 runs, to ensure they were named the 2011 Under 15 national champions.

There were also some individual accolades presented after the finals. North London's Millie Pope was rewarded for her batting performances after scoring the most runs on the day, including 2 retirements after scoring 21 runs, and the bowling award went to Isobel Moffatt who was the leading bowler on the day, taking 6 wickets.

The Lady Taverners has sponsored the ECB-run girls’ indoor and outdoor cricket competitions since 2003, giving 48,000 girls the opportunity to participate in cricket, many for the first time. The Lady Taverners competitions are the country’s only national girls’ cricket competitions, providing a vital pathway for the development of grassroots girls’ cricket.
