THE LORD’S TAVERNERS NATIONAL JUNIOR WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

12-Nov-2009

East of England won the Under 15 title while Yorkshire claimed the Under 19 crown at The Lord’s Taverners National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships 2009. The tournament took place on 31 October and 1 November at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium and featured young athletes from across the UK.

East of England beat off fierce competition in their final match, coming through a tough examination against Northern Ireland 15 - 12 in the deciding match. Yorkshire finished eventual winners in the U19 competition by defeating East Midlands 29 - 16 in the final. Other regions represented included London, North East, North West, South East, South West, Scotland, Wales and West Midlands.

In total, 150 disabled youngsters, representing 18 teams from around the country, took part in The Lord’s Taverners National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships. The annual tournament provides youngsters throughout the UK with the opportunity to represent their region on a competitive basis which is essential for the development of potential future Paralympic athletes.

Youth sports charity The Lord’s Taverners will donate nearly £2.5 million this year to give young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance. The charity is on target to raise over £1 million for disability sport ahead of the 2012 Paralympic Games thanks to support from The Peter Harrison Foundation, which has pledged £150,000 to The Lord’s Taverners Disability Sports Appeal.

The Lord’s Taverners has initiated a junior development programme with the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association (GBWBA) and has recently pledged 135 sports wheelchairs in partnership with the GBWBA.
