Are you at a loss as what to do with your old cricket kit? Why not give it to LV= SOS Kit Aid, which provides unwanted cricket and rugby kit to disadvantaged children in the UK and overseas?

It gives children of all abilities and backgrounds the chance to participate in sporting activities; it promotes social inclusion and helps to drive a sustainable environment through recycling.

Thousands of young people around the world who want to play cricket and rugby are unable to. LV= SOS Kit Aid guides and encourages schools, clubs and individuals to recycle surplus, unwanted items by donating them to children that need kit.

Since 2001, SOS Kit Aid, with the support of the International Rugby Board, has helped over 50,000 disadvantage young people worldwide to play rugby.

From 2011, the SOS Kit Aid scheme has expanded with support from LV=, the Lord’s Taverners and the ECB to include cricket kit, with the goal of helping even more disadvantaged young people in the UK and overseas.

One kilogram of kit supplies one child. In year one, LV= SOS Kit Aid hopes to collect and deliver 20,000kgs of kit in the UK and overseas; that is 20,000 young people getting their first taste of cricket or rugby.

Gloucestershire, Middlesex and Hampshire have already hosted kit collection days. So far kit in the UK has been donated to Archbishop Tenison’s School (Lambeth, adjacent to the Kia Oval), Stewart Headlam School (Bethnal Green), Addington School (Croydon) and Hitz (London based rugby projects). These donations have helped more than 500 young people play sport.

At each kit collection day there has been a series of cricket and rugby coaching sessions, with celebrities such as Steven Finn and Gareth Chilcott. The youngsters then help sort the kit which has been donated on the day and package it up for delivery.

2012 looks to be a busy year for LV= SOS Kit Aid as six regional days are planned across the country. Look out; it may be coming to a cricket or rugby ground near you soon.

Organising a kit collection

• An LV= SOS Kit Aid day simply involves organising a collection of surplus, unwanted, quality, clean rugby and cricket kit in your local community, school or club
