Giving young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance

SPECIALLY ADAPTED MINIBUSES

Our distinctive green minibuses are designed to give young people with either physical and/or learning disabilities the opportunity to see the world beyond the confines of the organisation which cares for them. The minibuses uses are used for taking the young people to the seaside, theme parks, day care centres and many other places to help them broaden their horizons.

We are proud to say that we have put over 900 minibuses on the road since 1975. This has been made possible through the fundraising efforts of our members and the generous sponsorship received from companies and individuals. We are also grateful to our vehicle partner Ford of Great Britain.

The buses themselves are specially adapted to each organisation's need, and branded in a fun design that makes the experience of travelling in The Lord's Taverners minibus all the more enjoyable for the participants.

Furze Down School who received their minibus in July 2009 said:

'Our minibus has now clocked 1000 miles, and has already enabled our pupils to access a large variety of rich learning opportunities, through physical, supported work and social events.  We appreciate your recognition of the needs of the students and the school.  Without your support, we would be limited in the opportunities we are able to provide.'

Linda Patterson Business Manager, Furze Down School October 2009

Timetable for applications

The Lord's Taverners minibus costs around £47,000 (depending on specifications). We do not give our minibuses away for free, but ask each organisation to make a minimum contribution of £10,000 for a standard minibus or £12,500 for a wheelchair accessible minibus.  We do this for the benefit of the beneficiary organisation for the following reasons:
  • It demonstrates that you are able to raise funds to maintain the vehicle once you have received it (each minibus costs about £4,000 a year in running costs).
  • We believe that if you as an organisation have helped to raise funds for your minibus, you will treat it with more respect, as you will have invested in the vehicle.
  • Once you have received your minibus it belongs to your organisation, provided the vehicle's use falls within our guidelines.

We would love to fund every request that we receive, but unfortunately we currently have a waiting list of two years for all applications on new minibuses. However, we do have a FAST TRACK (6-month waiting list) option where we ask for a minimum contribution of £20,000 for a standard minibus or £25,000 for a wheelchair accessible minibus.

You may not need a minibus straight away. If you are looking to replace your current minibus in a few years time, we suggest that you put your application in now so that when you do require the minibus you are at the top of our list. It also allows you time to raise funds towards the minibus.

Registration of vehicles

Please note that our vehicles are registered as Disabled Passenger Class and are exempt from VAT and road fund licence. When the vehicle is in use there must be a proportion of passengers with a disability travelling at all times. If not, then you may be in breach of the legal requirements set by DVLA for this type of vehicle.  In addition your insurance may be invalidated.

Recipients of Lord's Taverners minibuses are not permitted to change the vehicle classification (shown on the log book) without prior notification and approval from The Lord's Taverners.
