Giving young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance

SPORT & RECREATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Since 1988 The Lord's Taverners have given grants towards sports & recreational equipment under a programme known as SRSN (Sport & Recreation for young people with Special Needs).

We have helped over 2,000 organisations with many types of equipment from sports wheelchairs to special pool hoists, multi-sensory equipment to play ground equipment. We look to encourage those youngsters with special needs, particularly those with mobility, sensory and mental disabilities, to participate in sporting and recreational activities within a group environment. We believe it helps to build their self confidence, social skills and general fitness, which allows youngsters to achieve goals which may otherwise be beyond their reach.

Grants do not normally exceed £5,000. Examples of equipment which has been funded, are specially adapted sports equipment, outdoor play equipment, soft play and multi-sensory equipment, riding equipment, pool hoists, water ski equipment and sports wheelchairs.

The following would not normally be considered for a grant:
  • Capital costs
  • Holidays and travel
  • General Grants
  • Running costs including salaries
  • An application from an individual
  • However, applications will be considered for equipment to enable an individual to participate in a team/group recreational activity.

National Table Cricket Competition

The aim of Table Cricket is to provide young people who have severe physical disabilities with an opportunity to compete in a competitive game of cricket with an emphasis upon teamwork and sportsmanship, in a fun and enjoyable environment.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and The Lord's Taverners launched the competitive version of this game via their World Cup Table Cricket competition in 1999.

This version of cricket was developed at Nottingham Trent University by Doug Williamson, in the 'Project Adapted' programme, and is produced in kit form.
