Sticky Wicket 2009 – Match Report
The third annual event industry Sticky Wicket 7-aside took place again in Regents Park, with the Confex Allstars, Early Action Group, EC&O Venues, ExCel London, the NEC, United Business Media and the Lord’s Taverners doing battle for the Sticky Wicket Trophy.
With serious concerns about the weather, the group stages were got through at a pace with the top two event industry sides of EC&O Venues and United Business Media coming out on top to meet in the final.
During the final the weather broke but with true bulldog spirit the game continued as the spectators huddled under anything they could find to keep them dry. Particular thanks to umpires John Price and Bill Pegram who stood manfully in the downpour to see the game through.
The final was a close call, with United Business Media coming through as this year’s winners, with EC&O Venues being the losing finalists for the second year on the trot – maybe next year?
Sir Jeremy Hanley (President of the Middlesex Region) then presented the Sticky Wicket Cup and tankards to the winning team, and received a cheque for £16,000 on behalf of The Lord’s Taverners that was raised on the day for the charity. Thank you to all the Teams, Sponsors and Supporters and their generosity that made this possible in these challenging times.
The two Lord’s Taverners sides then concluded events by playing each other in a ‘friendly’, where fortunately no blood was spilt. Many thanks to those who took part in the Lord’s Taverners teams including Colin Salmon, Gordon Kennedy, Manish Bhasin, Brendan Cole, Simon Francis, Struan Rodger, Tom Wisdom, Joe Stilgoe, Alex Avery and Johnny Barran.
Many of those present retired to the Volunteer on Baker Street where much ale was drunk, rubbish spoken and plans for next year’s Sticky Wicket were started!
