Match Report

Frome, Somerset

Sunday 13 July 2008

The Lord's Taverners: 268 for 6
Frome: 271 for 2
Result: Frome won by 3 runs

Match report:

At last the sun shone and the Frome Cricket Club and the friends of the new hospital committee were rewarded with a crowd of several hundred to join the 200 guests in the magnificent marquee.

It was on this ground in 1935 that the unknown farmer’s son Harold Gimblett made his debut by scoring a century in only 63 minutes for Somerset against Essex. The local Frome batsmen showed similar form and, once they had negotiated Graham Rose and Billy Taylor followed by the nagging John Feaver and Chris White, they made hay with a formidable 271-2 in 35 overs . Jerry Guscott and Matt Perry, the Bath, England and Lions duo, were joined in athletic fielding by their Scottish rugby contempories Bryan Redpath and Carl Hogg. Paul Tisdale, the Exeter soccer manager, also tried to stem the flow with Roger Tolchard as sharp as ever behind the stumps.

A sterling reply was called for from Captain Guscott but Lloyd Scott, just released from his 9 foot high marathon robot suit, was the first Taverner to fall. The innings of the day came from Billy Taylor, the Hampshire pace man, who belied his county batting position to post an unbeaten century. John Feaver, champion ace server of his day, then belted the cricket ball for a dramatic 39, the pair adding 87 in 22 minutes. Alas, despite a late Scots charge from Hogg (8 not out) and Redpath (29 not out), the Taverners fell just 5 runs short on 266 – 7.

The size of the crowd and the excellent organisation of the hosts helped produce a great afternoon of cricket and fund raising in the sunshine, with 540 runs and loads of fun.
