The Lord’s Taverners Diamond Jubilee Tournament
Lord’s Cricket Ground Main Square
MANAGER: ROGER OAKLEY
ADMINISTRATOR: LORD’S TAVERNERS HQ
The Taverners owe a debt of gratitude to MCC for kindly allowing the club the use of the ground, the pavilion and the Tavern stand for the 60th Anniversary 8 aside match which was held on the main square at Lord’s. This gave the players an opportunity to change in the players’ dressing rooms in the pavilion, to enter the field via the Long Room and pavilion steps and to demonstrate cricketing talent on the main square.
The format was for six competing teams divided into two groups with each team having the chance to play three innings. In Group B, the Taverners talent led by Chris White beat the competitive Yankee Wanderers by one run, the Yankee Wanderers having travelled from all parts of the globe to play. They exacted revenge on the Abu Dhabi Diamonds by a large margin of twenty-six runs but in turn lost to the Taverners Talent by six wickets.
Indian Pearls, led by Sam Mendes won through to the final having succeeded against Tarrant’s Tigers, led by our President and the Diamond Geesers. This meant that the third and fourth place play off was between Tarrant’s Tigers, who accumulated a miserable thirty-nine for three with the President injuring himself in a delicate area in the course of a sparkling innings of three, and the Yankee Wanderers were handsome winners losing only one wicket in the process.
The final was a closely fought match between the Taverners Talent and Indian Pearls, with the Pearls scoring 63 for one, with the Taverners Talent falling just six runs short.
It was a pleasure to see the Taverners flag flying above the pavilion although it drooped a little when rain fell towards the end of the event.
We were truly grateful to Mick Hunt and his ground staff for allowing the third place play off and the final to be completed albeit in a light drizzle.
The day was rounded off by a champagne reception on the roof of the pavilion followed by dinner and presentation in the Long Room with Bob Bevan entertaining members and guests with stories of his cricketing prowess.
The event was a great success and received great publicity during Test Match Special when Jim Carter, who umpired and did some PA, was interviewed by Jonathan Agnew and gave the Taverners a 10-minute plug on the Saturday of the England v Pakistan test match.
