The annual Founders Day match took place on the Nursery Ground at Lord's. The Taverners captain, Chris Adams (England), won the toss and inserted the opposition, who were, as usual, Dr James Hull’s Drillers XI, gathered together by our regular and very generous sponsor.

After a slightly stuttering start the innings quickly gathered momentum when Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa) arrived at the crease. Early support came from Ceri Sweeney then Rhys Williams, both of Wales Rugby fame, but the accelerator was then pushed flat to the floor with the appearance of Owais Shah (England), Herschelle striking 116 off 71 balls and Owais 53 off 22. At the end of the alloted 30 overs, the Drillers were 241 for 5. Internationals Gus Mackay, Devon Malcolm and Vince Wells each took a wicket as did Graham Rose and Mark Austin (ITV).

In reply, the Taverners had reached 125 for 2 at the halfway stage of their innings when, sadly, rain stopped play. Being proper cricket, Duckworth Lewis was not resorted to and a draw was declared. For the Taverners, Ian Salisbury (England) had scored 74 off 52 balls and the captain was undefeated with 34. Our President had a quiet game, with just two gentle overs. A match much enjoyed by the players and umpires Milton Johns, Mike Denness and Richard Kershaw. Thanks also to scorer Trevor Sturgess and to the MCC for allowing use of the ground and not forgetting the ground staff for preparing, as usual, a fine strip.
