A storm had been forecast in the lead up to the Taverners traditional season opener against the Saracens All Stars at Mill Hill School. The weather turned out to be fine though a number of Taverners batsmen might have preferred a wash-out!

Inspired by the talented Steve Murdoch, the home side reached 226 for 6 from their 35 overs. Murdoch, David Priestly and Scott Murphy all made half centuries.

The Taverners fielding, inspired by debutant Jonnie Irwin, was exceptional. There was a wicket for another debutant, Rudolf Walker while Toby Tarrant took 2 for 34 and father Chris removed Noah Cato for a duck.

England captain Steve Borthwick was well caught by Neil Smith off the bowling of Taverners skipper Marcus Buckland. Credit also to Gus Mackay for a very tidy 1 for 15 off 5.

Twelve months earlier the Taverners chased down a similar score off the last ball. Drama of a different kind this time with star batsmen Mike Gatting and Neil Smith both out for nought, the latter going first ball. The Tarrants failed to trouble the scorers either with Toby another golden duck victim.

Edward Griffiths took 5 for 21, match host Nigel Wray an impressive 2 for 14, Cato 2 for 15 and Steve Murdoch took 5 catches in the outfield, one of them an absolute sensation.
The only batters to shine were Nigel Felton who made 32, another debutant Ryan Philpott managed a gutsy 15 while Gordon Kennedy and John Lever offered late resistance but the Taverners collapsed to 145 all out...to the merriment of many!

We look forward to the next instalment of this marvellous match and occasion which has now been running for 12 years thanks to Nigel Wray's continued generosity.

Marcus Buckland
