Aston Rowant edge The Taverners in a thriller at Wormsley!

The Lord’s Taverners took on local club side Aston Rowant Cricket Club at the picturesque Wormsley cricket ground, lovingly created by Sir John Paul Getty on his family’s Estate in Buckinghamshire, on Sunday 15 August. The Lord’s Taverners won the toss on a glorious summers day and elected to field in this Twenty20 encounter.

Aston Rowant, fielding two cricketing celebrities of their own in Lou Vincent (Lancashire, Worcestershire & New Zealand) and Paul Pritchard (Essex CCC), got off to a fine start thanks to openers Adam Muttit (44) and Jerry Smith (19), much to the appreciation of the crowd. The Taverners, thanks to a fine 4 over spell of bowling by Test Umpire and former Engand left-arm spinner Richard Illingworth (2-12) which included the prized wicket of Vincent, pulled the run rate back, and so the innings of Aston Rowant eventually closed on 125.

In reply, Chief Executive of the Lord’s Taverners Matthew Patten and former England batsman Clive Radley made a steady start in the face of some impressive bowling by 15 year old Linsey Smith, who also plays her cricket for Oxfordshire Women under 19’s, before Radley was dismissed by a fine yorker from first change Ryan Dutton’s first ball. Patten carried on, getting into the 30’s before succumbing to Aston Rowant’s fine bowling, but The Lord’s Taverners middle order, which included a useful contribution from former Durham, Kent, Leicestershire & England all rounder Vince Wells, ensured that they kept up with the run rate. And so it transpired that with 1 over to go, The Lord’s Taverners required 7 runs to win. Aston Rowant’s captain Jerry Smith took on the responsibility of trying to defend what appeared to be a lost cause with former internationals Richard Illingworth and Gus Mackay (Zimbabwe) at the crease, but a great diving stop by Lou Vincent and some fine block hole bowling ensured that The Taverners fell an agonising 2 runs short.

All agreed that it was a thrilling end to a special day at a most glorious venue.
