The Lord’s Taverners v Warwick School CC
Warwick School, Warwickshire
Samoan rugby international Mike Umaga stole the headlines from an array of international cricketers, as the Taverners claimed a comfortable seven wicket win at Warwick School, Warwickshire on Sunday 5th July 2009 v Old Warwickians.
Former Wellington Hurricanes and Rotherham centre Umaga, brother of ex-All Black captain Mike, took 3-39 from five tidy overs of medium pace.
England’s Neil Radford, Ashley Giles and Dougie Brown also all took wickets in the home innings, though none were able to contain Old Warwickian Sam Wood, who made an outstanding 112.
20 year old Kenilworth Wardens batsman Sam Wood, who also plays fly half for Rugby Lions, struck 14 fours and four sixes in his 64 ball innings.
He received good support from Durham UCCE namesake Dan Wood, who was unbeaten on 47 when the 32 over innings closed at 226-7.
Lloyd Scott (45) and Jeremy Rhodes (46, match day sponsor) got the Taverners’ response off to a good start, despite Dan Wood claiming two early scalps.
This set the stage perfectly for former Warwickshire and England A batsman Dominic Ostler to hammer a rapid 71, to see the visitors home with nearly four overs in hand.
Another former Bears and England man, Neil Smith, now Head Cricketing Coach and teacher at Warwick School, said: “It was a superb day, an excellent game played on a lovely ground in good weather. Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, we have raised over £5,000 for the Taverners.”
