Match report

There is, of course, no finer place to play a game of cricket on a sunny July day than at Lord’s.

Dr James Hull, our most generous sponsor, produced another talented side with a late Welsh replacement by the name of Herschelle Gibbs, who scored a quick-fire 85, with shots of silken splendour, before retiring. Glamorgan players David Hemp, Tom Maynard and Matthew Maynard all made significant contributions, as did one of our major sponsors, Sir Victor Blank, who struck a rapid 15.

The bowling honours were shared around, but a tough target was made somewhat easier by a magnificent innings by Jeremy Coney who stroked his way to 105 which commenced with an opening stand of 50 with Paul Aldred and was enhanced by debutant Simon Cleobury, Co-Chairman of YLTs, who scored an excellent 34. Taine Randell, the former All Blacks Captain got off the mark on this occasion and scored significantly more than our Captain for the day and Cricket President who holed out early on; a rare failure.

When Neil Smith was out for a rapid 27, it looked like curtains for the Taverners who needed 40 from the last three overs, but Colin Salmon played a magnificent innings, including four 6s over long on. Six runs were needed from the last ball, which happened to be a no-ball which went for 4, which rather upset James Hull’s plan, but perhaps justice was done with a run-out off the last ball to leave the match tied.

James Hull proved, once again, to be a magnificent sponsor and the match was attended by the record number of supporters in the Nursery Pavilion, regally entertained by Rachael Heyhoe Flint, Chris Tarrant, Robert Powell and Judith Chalmers and a fine day was capped with Middlesex winning the Twenty20, in a very tight contest at the Rose Bowl.

A really capital day.
