The Lord's Taverners Spring Lunch & AGM - A Tribute to Andrew Strauss
The Lord’s Taverners Spring Lunch
What a great launch to Ashes year we had at our Spring Lunch at Lord’s. As we sipped on a pint of Pilsner Urquell and Rebellion beer we were treated to a net session in front of our very eyes with Broad and Anderson bowling to Alastair Cook. Little did we know then that Anderson would bring up his 300th Test wicket and Broad would become Man of the Match at Lord’s.
This event has traditionally been a pre-season lunch to follow the AGM, but this time it was combined with a tribute to our double Ashes winning captain and Taverner, Andrew Strauss.
It was apt that we should not only celebrate his cricketing achievements, but also congratulate him and his wife Ruth for running the Marathon for the Tavs in April. They have already raised a ‘grand a mile’ for us! During the lunch Andrew Strauss admitted that it was the ‘most awful thing I have ever done in my life and I hated every minute’ but the cause kept him going!
Straussy came into the room to a standing ovation as he carried the Ashes urn from the Lord’s Museum up to the podium. From then on a host of people joined in the tribute.
Stephen Brenkley of the Independent complained that Strauss was the worst ever England Captain at withholding the England team sheet on the first morning of a Test. Former Middlesex greats Mike Selvey and Angus Fraser entered the fun. Selvey claimed that Strauss never used to hit the ball in the V down the ground unless he got an outside edge working to leg and Fraser thought ‘he wasn’t much of a player’ running through Strauss’ run of low scores in his opening games for Middlesex!
By the time Mike Gatting had mounted a rather fragile looking stool on stage and had his say, it was universally agreed that Andrew Strauss was not only a very fine Captain and opening batsman, but a great guy and a great Taverner. It was good to hear from Strauss himself for a few minutes before the day was beautifully rounded off by the best sporting impressionist, Kevin Connolly. His Bob Willis impression was extraordinary!
I began the day paying tribute to our great friend, the late Mike Denness and I closed the day with a few words from Mike Brearley, the Captain of Captains as a final tribute to Andrew Strauss. It was a brilliantly run event by Jo Davis and the team and in true Taverners style we had a lot of fun whilst raising over £25,000 for our Charity.
