THE LADY TAVERNERS FUN DAY, MUDCHUTE FARM - 1ST JULY 2010 29-Sep-2010
The day dawned bright and clear on 1 July. Fifteen or so Lady Taverners, friends and colleagues from the Kent & East Sussex and City Regions, headed up by Laura Collins and Carol Overton respectively, joined together to host a very special Fun Day at Mudchute Farm in London’s Docklands.
Daniel O’Sullivan found himself the juice bar man and coffee/tea maker for some thirsty ladies who arrived at around 10am. All dressed in Lady Taverners pink (except Dan!) we put soft toys, NatWest piggy banks, Taverners caps and other items into goody bags for dishing out later to the children as they left.
The schools arrived; Manor School from Brent came with 11 children and four carers,
Parayhouse School, Fulham, arrived by public transport with 26 children and 10 staff, while Paddock School from Wandsworth brought eight children and five staff. And so the fun began!
Split in to two groups, we toured the farm, seeing turkeys, sheep, cows, donkeys, goats, spitting llamas and very large pigs with lots of teeth - we all kept our hands and fingers behind our backs, as we had been told to! Walking through the fields seeing the animals with the 50-storey Canary Wharf Tower and other skyscrapers so close it felt one could touch them. It was the most amazing juxtaposition, country and money side by side!
Lunch was vegetable pasta provided by Denise and Tina, two amazing ladies that run the Mudchute Kitchen – a ‘living classroom’ that featured recently on TV’s Junior Apprentice. They were helped by eight lads from George Green’s School who had been there chopping up vegetables from around 8am.
After lunch it was off to feed the ducks and geese, back for the goody bags and then the schools headed back. The Lady Taverners sat outside in the sunshine with tumblers of wine and enjoyed lunch and a chat before we all headed off home. It was a perfect day!
Thanks specially to Carol and Laura for organising their teams, to Tina and Denise from Mudchute and the secondary school boys from George Green’s, with everybody giving them rousing cheers to end the trip. Roll on next year!
