The Lady Taveners Kent & Sussex Region hosted its first Burns Night Ball

26-Jan-2012

The Lady Taveners Kent & Sussex Region hosted its first Burns Night Ball at the delightful Pelham House in Lewes on Friday the 20th January. Over 70 people attended this inaugural event which has raised in excess of £2500 for the Lady Taveners Charity. The evening included traditional Scottish fayre, an address to the haggis, a Scottish Piper and Scottish Dancing. The event was organised by Laura Collins and supported by Lindsey Best of Pelham House and Lara Squires of Mayo Wynne Baxter. Given the success of this first year we are confident that the Burns Night 2013 will be an even bigger success!

Kent and Sussex Lady Taveners Winter Warmer Drinks Party

14-Nov-2011

The Kent and East Sussex Lady Taveners held a very successful drinks and canapés evening at the Hotel du Vin on Thursday evening. The drinks party was held to both raise funds for the Charity, which aims to provide sporting opportunities for young people, and also to launch the search for the “Face” of the Fashion Show, to be held on March 30th 2012.

The event was attended by 40 guests, who were entertained by Barbara Thorn, best known as Inspector Christine Frazer from The Bill, and Coop from Judge John Deed.  We were pleased to also welcome John Taylor, ex welsh, and British Lions International rugby player, who has recently returned from commentating on the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

We were delighted to also welcome representatives of some of the High Street Boutiques, who we are grateful to for supporting us in organising the Fashion Show. Our Chairman Laura Collins launched the search for the Face of Fashion, explaining this completion would be open to any female resident of the Borough of Tunbridge Wells who is 18 or over and is a minimum of 5 feet 7 inches tall.  The winner of the competition will take part in the fashion show, and receive a set of professional photographs.

Entry forms are available from Tricia, Laura, Caroline or Judy, on triciamuller@ballardsend.co.uk

Lady Taverners Charity Golf Day.

28-Oct-2011

Kent & West Sussex Lady Taverners committee held their eleventh golf charity day at Farleigh golf course just outside Croydon on the 6th October 2011. Although more wind-sailing than golf weather the 18 four ball teams enjoyed a brisk round of 18 hole golf, before warming up to a three course lunch with an impromptu auction when a number of players kindly donated items on the day for this. One item being a beautifully framed signed photo of Tiger Woods. The golf day prizes were presented by Derek Ufton. Alongside the raffle the event raised in total for the day £.............. and plenty of smiles!

The Lady Taverners LK Bennett evening

18-Oct-2011

An evening of shopping and socialising was enjoyed by supporters of the East Sussex and Kent Lady Taverners at the inaugural LK Bennett evening in the Brighton Lanes. The ladies enjoyed shopping for their new season outfits with LK Bennett offering  discount on all items as well as a goody bag, with local businesses donating to the raffle.

RECORD BREAKING LADY TAVERNERS CHARITY LUNCH

07-Jul-2011

A record breaking £8,000 was raised at the ninth seaside charity lunch organised by the Kent & East Sussex Lady Taverners at Eastbourne’s Grand Hotel.

The event was a sell-out success, attracting 180 local ladies and businesswomen from the town and surrounding area, and got off to a sparkling start with a Champagne reception on the hotel lawn.

During the lunch Master of Ceremonies, Bob “The Cat” Bevan MBE, hosted light-hearted games and organised the raffle. Afterwards The Darren Show - a Robbie Williams tribute act - took to the stage to entertain the audience and had guests singing and dancing next to their tables.

Battle-based Kirkham Young Healthcare Sales Recruitment and Eastbourne-based wine merchants H.T. White & Co. supported the event through sponsorship, enabling the Lady Taverners to raise even more money.

Laura Collins, Chairman of Kent & Sussex Region, welcomed everyone to the lunch and explained the fundraising work of the Lady Taverners, the fundraising arm of the sporting charity and club the Lord’s Taverners. Whilst the Lord’s Taverners is famous for its charitable giving to cricket the ladies’ section focuses on fundraising for specially adapted minibuses and sport and recreation facilities for young people with special needs.

Laura said: “Our motto is fun while fundraising and, once again, this event has combined great food, company, hospitality and friendship. We are very pleased we have made our seaside lunch at the Grand Hotel a regular event in our fundraising calendar and this year’s event was a record breaking success.”

Future events include a wine and shoe evening at LK Bennett in Brighton on September 8th, a golf day at Farleigh Court, Surrey, on October 6th and a cocktail party at Hotel du Vin, Tunbridge Wells, on November 10th. For further information email kentandeastsussex@ladytaverners.org.

WEST KENT ROUND UP

17-May-2011

Pictured: Joint Chairmen of the West Kent Region Graham Sellors and Freddie Cook

Christmas Lunch in January – a first for the Region in 21 years.
Blizzard conditions and 10 inches of overnight snow on the first day of December meant that we had
to postpone our Christmas lunch at 8 o’clock on the morning of the event. Thanks to the
committee’s efforts everyone attending the lunch was contacted and we were able to maintain the
good name of the Taverners. It also proved that having a good disaster recovery procedure in place
really does help and lessens the strain on everyone.
One of our VIP guests, former world snooker champion and Strictly Come Dancing star Dennis
Taylor, travelled for a gruelling seven hours the day before to attend the lunch, but regrettably his
noble efforts were also in vein since the audience was unable to get through the snow. Which left
him with the same return journey, one no doubt he will not forget easily.
The good news was that the venue, the Spa Hotel, in Tunbridge Wells agreed to waver all costs and
charges if the lunch could be rescheduled in January. So like a Phoenix rising from the Ashes on
Tuesday 11th January and not long after England had triumphantly won the all important Ashes,
West Kent’s loyal supporters sat down to their late but never the less popular Christmas lunch.
Thanks to Richard Stilgoe and the magnificent Orpheus choir the lunch got off to a great start and
the guests then enjoyed listening to Gus Fraser, former England opening bowler, recount his time at
the crease. Victor Ubugo and John Hollins then took part is a quick Q&A with West Kent President
Chris Cowdrey in the chair. Our loyal supporters and guests were then left rolling in the aisles by
Simon Evan’s wonderful anecdotes. He is a comedian we would highly recommend to every Taverner
region. We were also privileged to have Derek Underwood past president of the MCC say grace and
to enjoy the superb auctioneering of Adger Brown. He is one of the few who can turn auction
bidding into a horse race commentary to very amusing effect.
St George’s Day Lunch
We now look forward to the Region’s sell out St George’s Day lunch planned for April 20th at which
we will be entertaining some of our Gurkha colleagues, to whom we owe so much, along with some
star guests and the Royal Navy Drummers from HMS Nelson. All of West Kent events enjoy the
continued support of our Business Partners, who year in year out continue to give so generously.

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS WHEELCHAIR PRESENTATION TO THE VALLEY VIPERS

07-Mar-2011

When I was informed that there were some sports wheelchairs to present at a local basketball club I did, as we all do, phoned to make the necessary arrangements for a presentation. I was a little taken aback when I was told that I could only come along if I would play and train with them. It turns out that agreeing to do so gave me one of the best sporting occasions I have ever been involved with.

The Valley Vipers are a lovely bunch of people, some disabled, some not. They play wheelchair basketball, which means that able bodied people can play as well, making it a family affair for many of the members.

Before we began, the coaches ran through with me how to use the chair – not as easy as it looks. Then came the training routines. I found that I could either move the chair or pass/catch/shoot the ball, but I couldn’t do both together. After about half an hour, and some slight improvement on my part, we had a tournament. I felt sorry for my team mates as I was well below their level. However, the more I played, the better I got, and the better we played as a team.

Playing wheelchair basketball against experienced exponents of the game was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning. If you ever have the chance, take it with both hands!

And thanks to the Valley Vipers for making my family and me so welcome – it is a day that I will remember for ever.

THE EASTBOURNE LADIES LUNCH CLUB PRESENTS THE LADY TAVERNERS WITH A CHEQUE FOR £405

24-Jan-2011

The Lady Taverners charity has received a cheque for £405 from the Eastbourne Ladies Lunch Club.

The club, organised by Mayo Wynne Baxter Solicitors, meets at the town’s Grand Hotel and raised the money through a raffle held at the Christmas lunch. Prizes were donated by local businesses including wine merchants H.T. White and Sue Watson Chiropody.

Laura Collins, Chairman of the Kent & Sussex Region of the Lady Taverners, received the cheque from Lara Squires, of Mayo Wynne Baxter, and Jackie Webley from the Grand Hotel.

The Lady Taverners is the fundraising arm of the sporting charity and club the Lord’s Taverners. Whilst the Lord’s Taverners is famous for its charitable giving to cricket the ladies’ section focuses on fundraising for specially adapted minibuses and sport and recreation facilities for young people with special needs.

The ladies lunches are held bi-monthly at the Grand Hotel and local ladies and businesswomen are welcome to attend, subject to availability. The next lunch will be held on Friday, January 28th.

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS CHRISTMAS LUNCH, THE GRAND HOTEL, BRIGHTON - 1ST DECEMBER 2010

14-Jan-2011

Another well supported event for East Sussex.  Numbers were in fact down based on recent years, but we are aware of a number of reasons for that.

The first snow had arrived in Brighton before the event, but that did not deter the hardy eventgoers so that very few were lost on the day, although by the end of the day the weather had really set in and a number of people took refuge by booking rooms at the hotel  for the night.

473 people were hosted and entertained by Barry Williams and by Kevin Connolly. The usual raffle and auctions boosted the net proceeds from the event to a figure in excess of £34000 which was gratifying given all of the surrounding circumstances.

THE LORD`S TAVERNERS UNDER 19`S BOCCIA PROGRAMME

15-Nov-2010

Boccia England is now the new National Governing body for the sport of boccia across England. Prior to this Cerebral Palsy Sport was the governing body but as a charity that covers many other sports it was felt that boccia was growing so large in England, that it was time to have a separate body to deliver and support the sport effectively.
Boccia originated in Greece where players threw stones at a large stone target. It was later adapted for players with cerebral palsy and has been developed into a game played by all, from purely recreational level to a variety of competitive events.
The performance pathway for boccia leading to the Paralympics remains purely for those with severe impairment.
Boccia England aims to help to develop boccia throughout England for players from all sectors of the community. There are many opportunities to get involved in boccia from playing to other roles like coaching, time keeping and event coordinating.
The Lord`s Taverners Under 19`s Boccia programme is part of this extended opportunity to encourage young people with a physical disability to play and compete at local, county ,regional and national level.
