Report from East Midlands Region of The Lord’s Taverners

05-Jan-2012

Report from East Midlands Region of The Lord’s Taverners

The last six months have been positive on a number of fronts.

We started with The Eve of Test Dinner at Trent Bridge which again proved a popular event. John Barclay and comedian Rod Woodward entertained us royally helping us to raise funds for the charity.

New Committee member Ian Guyler and Leicestershire CEO Mike Siddall have been instrumental in raising our profile in Leicestershire and as a result of their efforts in November we began a new relationship with Network LE a young persons professional networking organisation in Leicester. They have made Lord’s Taverners their adopted charity for the next year. They organise the events and let us run the raffles etc. Good access to a new market and fundraising opportunities.

Our Christmas Lunch supported by Ex Leicestershire cricketer Paul Nixon and Duncan McKenzie was a great success, Duncan once again proving a great speaker and one of the nicest people you could wish to meet. Paul’s explanation of on tour activities proved both enlightening and entertaining.

The Christmas Lunch also provided an opportunity to say thank you to BBC sports Editor Mark Shardlow for all his hard work as our president and to welcome Jonathan Agnew as our new president. Mark has done a sterling job and despite his other commitments I know Jonathan is hoping to make a similar contribution.

Finally just before Christmas we confirmed that we will be playing a Lord’s Taverners cricket match at Grace Road on 18 or 19 August also involving a team from Leicester Tigers rugby and the Matt Hampson Foundation. This is a great new opportunity that we are looking to explore.

Looking forward to seeing you at Trent Bridge on 24 May for our  Eve of Test dinner, our first event hosted by Jonathan Agnew.

Lady Taveners Robbie Williams Tribute Lunch

14-Nov-2011

On an unseasonably hot October day, the Lincolnshire Lady Taverners and their guests enjoyed an even hotter performance by “Robbie Williams”.  They were entertained during lunch with him covering numbers from his ‘swing’ repertoire, before taking to the floor to dance and sing along to songs from his “Take That” days.  This is the second tribute lunch organised by the Lincolnshire Ladies as a result of last year’s “Elvis” being so successful.  Requests have been made to make this an annual event, and “Tina Turner” is already lined-up for 2012.

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS AND LECEISTERSHIRE CRICKET CLUB JOIN FORCES

03-May-2011

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is delighted to have signed a charity partnership with The Lord’s Taverners. Leicestershire Chief executive Mike Siddall said “We are delighted to support the activities of the Lord’s Taverners.”

Roger Summerton, East Midlands chairman of The Lord’s Taverners, echoed Mike’s enthusiasm for the partnership. “We are delighted to be involved with Leicestershire as they focus increasingly on being part of the Leicestershire community. We fundraise in the county and also put significant amounts back, most recently through helping to fund sensory equipment at Goldhill Play Scheme and 5 wheelchairs for Leicester Cobras wheelchair basketball team. The partnership will help us do more”

As part of the partnership Leicestershire have made Sunday 15 May a charity day at Grace Road for Lord’s Taverners. This will provide an opportunity to raise funds but also to profile some of the work that is done by The Lord’s Taverners. Please do come along and support The Taverners at this event.

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS EAST MIDLANDS ROUND UP - MARCH 2011

07-Mar-2011

With the challenging economic climate much of the recent effort has focused on groups which need support to help those who are less able to support themselves. Various visits to Chesterfield, Hucknall Mansfield and Leicester can remind us all of the importance of Lord’s Taverners in this sector.

We were delighted to give away a minibus to Norsaca in Nottinghamshire. The plan was to present it at the Christmas Lunch in London but due to the snowy conditions the bus failed to get beyond the South Midlands. We in the East Midlands were delighted to present it at our Christmas Lunch where Tom O’Connor proved to be a tremendous guest speaker. The event was well received and gives us an excellent platform to move forward in the spring.

With a break with tradition our eve of test dinner in the summer will be on Wednesday 27 July but located at Trent Bridge it will continue to have a tremendous cricket atmosphere.

We are delighted that as a result of the efforts of Lord’s Taverner and chief executive of Leicestershire, Mike Siddall, we are finalizing a partnership agreement with Leicestershire County Cricket Club which should generate benefits for both organizations and particularly for Lord’s Taverners will give us a stronger base in Leicestershire.

Finally it was our pleasure to recently present Mansfield Maulers wheelchair basketball club with two wheelchairs as well as assistance in procuring a third. Their delight at being able to involve more individuals and give them the opportunity to boost their self confidence was tangible. This is a great little club where participation is everything and epitomizes the sort of organization where we can make a real difference.
