THE LORD'S TAVERNERS SPORTING LUNCH, WARWICKSHIRE CCC - 2ND DECEMBER 2010 14-Dec-2010
The Lord’s Taverners Sporting Lunch raises £20,000 for charity
The Lord’s Taverners Christmas Sporting Lunch, hosted by television sports presenter and President of The Lord’s Taverners in the West Midlands Gary Newbon, has raised £20,000 for disabled and disadvantaged children.
Over 400 guests joined Gary Newbon and many of his sporting friends and colleagues for the Lunch at Warwickshire Country Cricket Ground’s Jaguar Suite, and which marked the finale of the charity’s 2010 fundraising calendar.
Among the highlights of the entertainment for guests were two unique sporting slots – Ashley Giles, Director of Cricket at Warwickshire CCC and England selector, and Vikram Solanki of Worcestershire CCC took to the stage and gave their early thoughts on The Ashes series in Australia.
Adrian Chiles, TV presenter and life-long West Bromwich Albion FC fan was joined by Birmingham City Manager Alex McLeish, and Gerard Houllier Manager of local derby rivals Aston Villa, and entertained the guests with anecdotes on their love of football, and gave an entertaining insight into the current pressures of both football management and TV presenting, and the influence the press can have.
Other sporting celebrities showing their support for The Lord’s Taverners and attending the Lunch were Darren Maddy, Devon Malcolm, MJK Smith, Dennis Amiss, Steve ‘bumpy’ Rhodes, Tim Munton and Neal Radford.
Speaking after the event, Gary Newbon said: “Once again this regular slot on The Lord’s Taverners annual fundraising event calendar was another very special and enjoyable lunch. Not only did it attract a significant number of guests and a great line-up of sporting greats, all of whom are established supporters of the charity, but the Lunch also raised an incredible £20,000.
“I always enjoy hosting the Christmas Lunch, which this year took place the day after the Carling Cup quarter final between Birmingham City and Aston Villa – making our sporting slots with the club’s respective managers particularly interesting and entertaining . Each year, the event marks the start to the festive season here in Birmingham and I am once again thrilled at the number of guests and sporting celebrities that were able to join us today.”
Trevor Foster, Regional Chairman for The Lord’s Taverners in the West Midlands added: “This event is always one not to miss for both its enjoyment and networking opportunities and this year proved another relaxed and fun afternoon, ideal for entertaining clients and business contacts. The £20,000 raised on the day represents a spectacular conclusion to our fundraising efforts in 2010, and I am so grateful to the West Midlands and professional community for supporting the day in such fine style.”
