Drayton Manor Theme Park hosted the Midlands Region of the Lady Taverners Fun Day

28-Nov-2011

Once again Drayton Manor Theme Park hosted the Midlands Region of the Lady Taverners Fun Day.  We hosted 124 children and carers from 11 schools and organisations.  The weather was perfect – dry and not too hot.  As the buses started to arrive “the pink ladies” were there to meet and greet all the children and carers.  The children were so excited talking about the rides they wanted to go on....most of them in Thomasland.

The Midlands Lady Taverners were joined by Immediate Past President Baroness Rachael Heyhoe Flint, Chairman of the Lady Taverners Sally Surridge and Susie Mills.

Over lunch the children were talking about their favourite rides, as well as enjoying a lovely lunch supplied by Drayton Manor.  Colin Bryan – MD of Drayton Manor – joined in the fun being with us all for lunch.

As we said goodbye to the children, they were delighted to receive a lovely teddybear courtesy of Duncan Spence.

I think the journey home for all the children would have been filled with chat about their wonderful day at Drayton Manor.

BARONESS RACHAEL HEYHOE FLINT GOLF DAY AT PATSHULL PARK ON THURSDAY 21ST JULY

14-Nov-2011

16 teams of golfers enjoyed a wonderful day’s golf at Patshull Park Hotel and Country Club on Thursday 21st July.   The weather was perfect – no rain.  During the day, some children from Penns Hall School, Wolverhampton came along to join us for the fun of the day.  They left clutching their Golfers “goody” bag, as well as their Lady Taverners caps, although the talk was more about the bacon butties.....As the golfers returned, anticipation was mounting as to which team had won.  Following a lovely dinner and after dinner speech by Professor David Thomas, Rachael announced the winners, not to mention “magic moments” of the day. We were joined by Marion Buckle of the Lady Taverners Golf Society;  Chrissie Colbeck – Council member; and Carol Overton of the City Region.
A great day with the region raising over £6,000 for the charity.

The Lady Taverners Afternoon Tea with the Calender Girls

11-Nov-2011

Molineux (home of Wolverhampton Wanderer’s Football Club) was the venue for Afternoon Tea with the Calendar Girls – Lynda Bellingham; Jan Harvey and Ruth Madoc.  The girls were performing at the Grand Theatre Wolverhampton and spared some time to join fellow Lady Taverners and friends.   After enjoying a wonderful Tea, we all enjoyed alot of fun and laughter with the “girls” before they headed off to the Theatre ready for the evening performance.  Around 30 guests also went along to the evening performance. Everyone had a great time, and £750 was raised for the Lady Taverners Charity.

Presentation of Sports Wheelchairs at Wolverhampton Wanderer's Football Club

11-Nov-2011

The funding of the powerchairs was Rachael’s own specially requested project at a Celebratory Dinner held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in July to commemorate Rachael’s 11 years as President of The Lady Taverners.  The new speciality wheelchair football powerchairs, costing a total of £18,000, are faster than domestic powerchairs with a top speed of 6mph. The chairs will enable the young Wolves Warriors players to compete on equal terms against other football club’s teams across the country and enable more disabled youngsters to play wheelchair football for the first time.

Rachael said: “I am delighted to be able to give such a personal legacy to mark my time as president of The Lady Taverners and to give something tangible to sports mad youngsters from my home town. These powerchairs will help the Wolves Warriors football team go from strength to strength while giving even more disabled youngsters the opportunity to enjoy the physical and social benefits of competitive sport. As you will see, Trevor Foster – Chairman of the Midlands Lords Taverners, Marilyn Fry Councillor of the Lady Taverners, as well as myself, joined in the presentation.

TIM CLAY AND FRIENDS CYCLE TO PARIS FOR THE TAVERNERS

21-Apr-2011

On April 13th three Lord’s Taverners supporters joined a group of 15 other riders to cycle 300 miles from London to Paris in just four days. Tim Clay (Harborne CC) was joined on the trip by the Dave Smallwood and Simon Beevers, directors of his club’s sponsors (D2 Communications Ltd) and between them they raised nearly £10000. Tim Clay says “The first day was a bit tough, up and over the undulating South Downs. But this was then followed by a four and a half mile hill at the start of day two just outside Calais and a couple more pretty steep climbs shortly after. You just have to keep telling yourself that there must be a downslope on the other side! At one point I thought that I would never get on a bike again, but the funny thing is now that I have done it, I would quite like to do another long ride. I would recommend it to anyone. It is eminently doable, even with modest fitness, although it is worth putting in the training just to get in shape. Four days in the saddle culminated in a champagne soaked finish by the Eiffel Tower and a few beers to follow!”

Tim continues to raise funds for the Taverners. His next event is a “Sportsmans’ Lunch” to be held in a marquee at Harborne CC on Friday October 7th 2011 starting at 12.00 noon. Tickets are priced at £70, or £700 for a table of ten. Contact timclay@tiscali.co.uk. Ex Liverpool player Jan Molby is lined up alongside comedian Gary Marshall, so it promises to be an entertaining afternoon.

St Peters Retain Lady Taverners County Cup

St Peters School from Solihull ran out winners of The Lady Taverners Under 15 Girls County Cup on Friday. This is the third year in a row that St Peters have been county champions in the increasingly popular 8 a side Indoor Game. 9 schools from around the county won through to the finals day at the Indoor Cricket School at Edgbaston. The final was a close foughrt affair between St Peters and Rugby High School with St Peters greater experience eventually winning the day.

St Peters now move forward to the Regional finals in March before hopefully representing Warwickshire in the National Finals at Lords in May. In 2009 the school became National Champions at U13. The picture shows Ashley Giles, Director of Cricket, at Warwickshire CCC presenting the trophy to some of the victorious St Peters team.

The previous week Tudor Grange School from Solihull won The Lady Taverners U 13 event beating Golden Hillock in the final. This was again a 9 team tournament held at the Indoor School at Edgbaston.

Tudor Grange will now go forward to the Regional Finals in March

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS SPORTING LUNCH, WARWICKSHIRE CCC - 2ND DECEMBER 2010

14-Dec-2010

The Lord’s Taverners Sporting Lunch raises £20,000 for charity

The Lord’s Taverners Christmas Sporting Lunch, hosted by television sports presenter and President of The Lord’s Taverners in the West Midlands Gary Newbon, has raised £20,000 for disabled and disadvantaged children.

Over 400 guests joined Gary Newbon and many of his sporting friends and colleagues for the Lunch at Warwickshire Country Cricket Ground’s Jaguar Suite, and which marked the finale of the charity’s 2010 fundraising calendar.

Among the highlights of the entertainment for guests were two unique sporting slots – Ashley Giles, Director of Cricket at Warwickshire CCC and England selector, and Vikram Solanki of Worcestershire CCC took to the stage and gave their early thoughts on The Ashes series in Australia.

Adrian Chiles, TV presenter and life-long West Bromwich Albion FC fan was joined by Birmingham City Manager Alex McLeish, and Gerard Houllier Manager of local derby rivals Aston Villa, and entertained the guests with anecdotes on their love of football, and gave an entertaining insight into the current pressures of both football management and TV presenting, and the influence the press can have.

Other sporting celebrities showing their support for The Lord’s Taverners and attending the Lunch were Darren Maddy, Devon Malcolm, MJK Smith, Dennis Amiss, Steve ‘bumpy’ Rhodes, Tim Munton and Neal Radford.

Speaking after the event, Gary Newbon said: “Once again this regular slot on The Lord’s Taverners annual fundraising event calendar was another very special and enjoyable lunch. Not only did it attract a significant number of guests and a great line-up of sporting greats, all of whom are established supporters of the charity, but the Lunch also raised an incredible £20,000.

“I always enjoy hosting the Christmas Lunch, which this year took place the day after the Carling Cup quarter final between Birmingham City and Aston Villa – making our sporting slots with the club’s respective managers particularly interesting and entertaining . Each year, the event marks the start to the festive season here in Birmingham and I am once again thrilled at the number of guests and sporting celebrities that were able to join us today.”

Trevor Foster, Regional Chairman for The Lord’s Taverners in the West Midlands added: “This event is always one not to miss for both its enjoyment and networking opportunities and this year proved another relaxed and fun afternoon, ideal for entertaining clients and business contacts. The £20,000 raised on the day represents a spectacular conclusion to our fundraising efforts in 2010, and I am so grateful to the West Midlands and professional community for supporting the day in such fine style.”
