Gateshead Stadium Fun Day Success 28-Nov-2011
Once again this year The Lord's Taverners through its Northumberland region contributed both financial and administrative support organising the summer fun day at Gateshead International Stadium for disabled family’s and their carers.
The event was formally opened by Gold Medal-Winning Paralympian Stephen Miller and it was great to see so many people enjoying access to the stadium.
Despite early poor weather on the day the sun eventually shone and a great day was had by the 1105 registered visitors, 60+ stalls and wide variety of fully inclusive free entertainment and activities including archery, paintball, rock climbing, wrecking ball, adapted cycling, table cricket, rugby, football, electric go karting, crèche mobile, obligatory face painting, scary scars, balloon and bubble men, pat dogs, farmyard and many more, with sensory and chill rooms on hand and free treatments for carers and parents if a rest from it all was needed!
LT would also like to particularly thank the Gateshead Disabled Childrens Team and Cross Road Care for Young Carers without whom this could not be organised. Additionally the invaluable help on the day provided in particular by the Gateshead Stadium and Council Staff, the Army Cadets and Cleveland Fire Brigade Volunteers and our own team of NE Taverners and all those that kindly contributed.

NEW MULTI- SENSORY SYSTEM BRINGS A SPLASH OF FUN TO PERCY HEDLEY 04-Oct-2011
A cricket charity specialising in giving young people a ‘sporting chance’, has donated a £25,000 grant to enhance the hydrotherapy pool experience for disabled children at Percy Hedley School in Forest Hall.
The money provided has been used to install a multi-sensory system at the pool. The versatile sound and lighting system will aid relaxation, and above all, add to the fun that the sessions bring to pupils.
This is one of many grants made to the Percy Hedley Foundation by the Northumberland and Durham region of The Lord’s Taverners, who are long term supporters of the charity.
Speaking of the benefits the new system will bring, Anna Coates, superintendent physiotherapist at the foundation said:
“The new multi-sensory equipment in the hydrotherapy pool will provide invaluable benefits to disabled children who have to struggle with the challenges of everyday living. In the warm water these restrictions are reduced, giving the opportunity for free movement and exercise.”
Alan Wright, Chairman of The Lord's Taverners for the Northumberland and Durham region, said:
“The Lord’s Taverners are delighted to assist Percy Hedley School with its need for the hydrotherapy system. Pupils will be able to receive greater enjoyment from their sporting recreation time, which is what this charity aims to achieve. It makes all our fundraising efforts worthwhile to see the pleasure it will bring to the children, their families and teaching staff.”
Des Bustard director of fundraising and marketing commented:
“I am extremely grateful to The Lord’s Taverners for providing the children at Percy Hedley School with this latest facility which will greatly enhance their experiences as they strive towards living a full and active life.
“It is marvellous to work in partnership with an organisation with a similar aim to ours which is to give disadvantaged and disabled young people the opportunity to enjoy physical activities.”
The donation was marked with an opening ceremony at Percy Hedley’s headquarters at Forest Hall on Tuesday 20th September, where Lord’s Taverners representatives were shown the equipment in operation.

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS CHRISTMAS LUNCH, NEWCASTLE CIVIC CENTRE - 1ST DECEMBER 2010 22-Feb-2011
A very successful year for our region peaked on December 1st when we held our Christmas Lunch in Newcastle Civic Centre.
We were delighted to have Chief Executive Matthew Patten with us for a great day with over 600 guests and in excess of £40,000 raised. We were particularly grateful to Matthew for making it to join us in the middle of a spell of bad weather which made travelling a challenge and a half.
This event is traditionally the start of the festive season in the North East and guests enjoyed superb entertainment from two excellent speakers in rugby great Bill Beaumont and top comedian Josh Daniels.
The lunch also marked the end of term for Kevin Pattison who was applauded to the rafters for a great innings. We were delighted to present him with a signed shirt courtesy of Bill Beaumont.
New Chairman Alan Wright started the new year with a very enjoyable speaking tour in Australia, including the lunch before the day nighter in Hobart.
One great result of the trip was an excellent relationship with Lord’s Taverners Tasmania and their Chairman Paul Sheahan. In what may be a first, the two regions are now twinned.
They are over 11,000 miles apart but look forward to keeping in touch and having a major get-together when Durham host an Ashes Test in 2013.
As well as being our national 60th anniversary, 2010 was also the 25th year of Northumberland and Durham region.
It was great to keep in touch with so many good friends and supporters, including a lovely party at the home of past Chairman Colin Basey.
Before too long, the Region will have another celebration when we reach the milestone of raising one million pounds.
Highlights to come in 2011 include many partnerships, including the famous Lobster Festival at Hardwick Hall on April 15th, and a super eights tournament in conjunction with Butterwick Hospice at the Durham ground in September.
