Lord’s Taverners Golf Day – September 2011

30-Nov-2011

The annual golf tournament organised by the Chairman of the Scottish branch of the Lord’s Taverners, Arthur Rowley, took place in Banchory on the 16th September 2011.

There were 18 teams involved in the event and a host of well know faces including Gordon Kennedy, Chris Simmons, Kevin Drinkell, Jess Conrad, Alex Rae to name but a few. The event kicked off with a cocktail party on the evening of the 15th which gave everyone a chance to mingle and also have a quick look at the wide range of raffle and auction prizes that would be available the next day.

On the morning of the 16th we awoke to discover that the heavens had opened and the weather was, to say the least, wet and ‘dreich’!! This didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits as the teams started to arrive at the golf club – all were raring to go….. after some bacon rolls the match started at 1pm with the traditional shotgun start. We had expected a few to give up and come in to the warmth of the club but not this lot – every single person finished their round and although some scores were perhaps slightly higher than expected everyone had a smile on their face.

After drying off and warming up everyone attended the dinner in the evening for the prize giving, raffle and auction. Lord’s Taverners Scottish President Ian Doyle hosted the evening with Eastenders actor Ryan Philpot taking on the task of hosting the auction. Not surprisingly local lad and Walker Cup player James Byrne took the title for best round.

A most enjoyable and successful day was had with over £10,000 being raised for the Lord’s Taverners and a £2,000 donation to the local 8888 charity dementia Forget-Me-Knots. There are already several bookings for teams for 2012…….

THE LORD'S TAVERNERS GOLF DAY, BANCHORY - 23RD JULY 2010

01-Sep-2010

Television and sporting celebrities were out in force for a charity golf tournament in Deeside yesterday.

They were taking part in The Lord’s Taverners event at a sun-drenched Banchory course in support of a local dementia charity.

The Taverners chose the Forget-Me-Not group as partner for the fundraiser.

Holby City actor Robert Powell, comedian Tom O’Connor and Chris Simmon and Carl Collins, who play Danny and Nick in The Bill were among those teeing off.

Also taking part were sports starts including former Scotland rugby players Gavin Hastings and John Jeffrey, and cricketer John Edrich.

Forget-Me-Not fundraiser Ruth Morrison said last night “It’s been a great day and the weather couldn’t have been better. Everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves and we had quite a few visitors to the course.”

She added that the Forget-Me-Not group hoped the Banchory event would become an annual one with the Taverners.

A dinner and auction was held last night, all proceeds from the day are being split between the two charities.
