Wessex Lady Taverners sail into springtime
The weather had been glorious in the run up to our 'Sailing into Springtime Luncheon' in April - what better way to spend the afternoon than gazing across the harbour with drink in hand? However, this is England and the day dawned on Sandbanks shrouded in mist but Lady Taverners are made of sterner stuff - weather would not dampen our spirits and we set out to have a good time - let the fun begin! Aimee arrived dressed as a very glamorous mermaid ready to sell the raffle tickets and didn't she do well! ’Pete the parrot' provided a very colourful centrepiece for each table. Imagine the surprised expressions as he repeated every word uttered.
Pete the parrot had been Diana Thomas' idea and we had had lots of fun trying him out on friends prior to the event. Diana had been really looking forward to witnessing the reaction of the guests on the day but unfortunately, she was unable to attend due to her husband's illness. As we all know, Leslie Thomas passed away recently and Diana had nursed him to the end, barely leaving his side but through all those difficult days we would talk on the phone and she never failed in her commitment to this event.
Diana was, of course, the first national chairman and has continued to support the Wessex region throughout the years. I have been regional chairman for four years now and we have worked on events together - having lots of fun along the way and I would just like to pay tribute to a very special lady. It is a privilege to know her.
