Boccia set to benefit from huge funding boost
The UK’s leading youth sports and disability charity, the Lord’s Taverners, has received a huge funding boost thanks to players of a charity lottery.
The Lord’s Taverners was awarded £6,000 by People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
The organisation will use the money to run the Lord's Taverners U19 National Boccia Championships with the goal of increasing the competitive playing opportunities for young people with physical disabilities nationally.
The aim is to expand the current competition through the introduction of 12 new county competitions throughout the country. Boccia is an ideal sport for people with physical disabilities as it is designed to be low impact, promote teamwork, improve communication skills, organisation skills and build self-esteem. The programme has proven the existing demand for sport opportunities for young people with disabilities with over 1,000 youngsters from 28 counties participated in last year’s competition. Furthermore, the majority of local Boccia competitions are targeted at young people with special educational needs and promoted as inclusive.
Chief Executive of the Lord’s Taverners, Paul Robin, said: “The Lord's Taverners believes that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, regardless of ability or background. The £6,000 grant being provided by the People’s Postcode Trust has provided a massive boost for our Boccia competition and will help even more disabled youngsters play the sport”.
People’s Postcode Lottery is a charity lottery, where players play with their postcodes to win cash prizes while raising money for good causes. As a charity lottery, 50p from every £2 ticket goes to support charities and good causes across England, Scotland and Wales, including People’s Postcode Trust. People’s Postcode Lottery believes in supporting local communities so the money raised stays local to players.
