Lord's Taverners Relay Marathon 2014

Lord's Taverners Relay Marathon 2014

The annual Lord’s Taverners Relay Marathon was a huge success with 11 teams taking part. All teams arrived in time for the group warm up which consisted of loud music, dancing and stretching – a fun start to a Sunday morning. At 10:30am the first leg of runners bolted at the sound of the field gun and the race was under way. Many family and friends were there to support their runners and on occasions run with them to the finish line. We even had a team of parents from St Gabriel’s who took part in the race just for fun.

The U13 competition was close fought right up to the final leg but Sunningdale School were victorious with an impressive time of 01:38:53. The U11 competition was valiantly run by all teams involved but was convincingly won by Cothill in a time of 01:43:55 which would have placed them 3rd in the U13 competition. Congratulations to all the runners who took part and completed the course – a fantastic achievement.

The day wasn’t just about the competition it was also about raising money to buy sports wheelchairs for more disabled young people so that they can access sport. Thanks to all those who took part we are on course to raise over £7,000 which will transform the lives of 8 disabled children. To add to the event we also held a competition for runners to design their own minibus with the theme ‘what sport means to you’. Our winners were Olly Whitehead from Eagle House and Grace from St Gabriel’s with their bright designs.

The event could not have taken place without the help of all our volunteers so thank you for giving up your time on Sunday. BT volunteers and Lord’s Taverners Thames Valley committee members marshalled the coursse, Al Romaines entertained with his lively commentatary and Manor Green School drove down their Lord’s Taverners specially adapted minibuses, making it a special event.

Finally we would like to thank Sir Anthony Seldon to allow us to use their beautiful school to host the Relay Marathon and Steve Blosse for all his organisation and work behind the scenes.
