Cricket kit donation inspires young cricketers in Antigua
Our sports kit donations are continuing to make a massive difference both at home and abroad. Recent donations have had a huge impact on young people in African countries such as Uganda and Rwanda, and on the sub-continent in India where Project Front Foot in Mumbai have benefited from your kind donations.
But the latest donation of cricket kit landed at Urlings CC (Antigua) where children have received their first ever set of cricket whites and equipment, and the game is now thriving at the club as a result.
Urlings CC is on a mission to bring to cricket to more youngsters in their local community and the first step towards that was to get some kit! Now they have that, their intention is to nurture grass roots talent through an Academy for youngsters and reach out to local schools to get more youngsters playing the game, before building a community and generate income streams to ensure the sustainability of the club.
Its looking good so far…
A children’s programme has now been set up with all children participating using their new cricket whites. Boys and girls aged 5-16 of all abilities attend the sessions held every Friday from 5pm-6.30pm. This is a fantastic development considering before this they had very little access to cricket due to it not being played at school or being part of low income families with one parent.
Their love of the game has grown so strong that the youngsters now attend the senior team’s home matches with their families while using their new kit in the nets. A regular home crowd for these matches see’s food and drinks being brought, generating much needed income for the club. Cricket is very much back at the heart of the community.
Having new kit has seen more children playing and watching cricket at the club than ever before and girls are now playing cricket for the first time, all of which had never worn cricket whites before the donation.
Inspired by the impact of cricket at the club, plans are now being put in place by Urlings CC to pay for a coach to train 4-5 players from each of the eight local village teams to become coaches. The hope is that this will happen annually to allow for progression and continual influx of new coaches and in the long run more and better players.
This is a brilliant story and just one of many that come about as a result of your kit donations.
