Past Presidents 1960 - 1969 Past Presidents 1970 - 1979 Past Presidents 1980 - 1989 Past Presidents 1990 - Present Presidents Lady Taverners 1987 - Present Sir John Mills CBE 1950 - 1951 Our Founder President enjoyed a career spanning over 70 years in which he appeared in or directed over 110 films. He played the leading roles in many war time films, the most famous including 'Ice Cold in Alex' and 'Tunes of Glory'. His performance in 'Ryan’s Daughter' earned him an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1971. John Snagge OBE 1952 and 1964 John worked for the BBC for 41 years, originally as a BBC Radio Home Service announcer (where he was famed for wearing a dinner jacket as he read the news!) and latterly as a TV Newsreader. He announced the D Day landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944 and famously commentated on the Oxford and Cambridge boat race from 1931 to 1980. He played a prominent part in the foundation of the charity. Martin Boddey 1953 and 1971 (Founder) One of the original Founder Subscribers of The Lord's Taverners, Martin Boddey was an Opera Singer turned Actor. He was one of the busiest and most popular character actors of the 1950s and 60s, appearing in well over fifty feature films and numerous television programmes, including 'The Third Man' and 'The Naked Civil Servant'. Boddey was the principal moving spirit behind our founding and was subsequently acknowledged as our Founder. His second term as President coincided with The Lord's Taverners 21st anniversary. Jack Hawkins CBE 1954 A famous actor who is best remembered for his military roles. He starred in many famous films including 'The Cruel Sea', 'Bridge on the River Kwai', 'The League of Gentlemen', 'Lawerence of Arabia' and 'Ben Hur'. Major A Huskisson OBE MC 1955 Enjoyed a successful career in the army. The first President of The Lord’s Taverners who was not an actor. Tommy Trinder 1956 A famous stand up comedian whose catchphrase was ‘you lucky people!’. Tommy also turned actor and appeared in many Ealing Comedies. He is perhaps best known as compere of the TV show 'Sunday Night at the Palladium'. Stephen Mitchell TD 1957 A well known theatrical impresario closely associated with Terence Rattigan whose one-act plays he championed. Stephen was also Chairman of The Lord's Taverners. Sir John Barbirolli 1958 Sir John was a famous conductor, who played the violin and cello as a child. He attended the Trinity College of Music and then The Royal College of Music. He joined the Army at end of World War I where he first had the opportunity to conduct an orchestra. He went on to conduct The London Symphony Orchestra, The Scottish Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Halle Orchestra. Sir Ian Jacob GBE CB 1959 A Lieutenant-General in the Army, he had been Military Assistant Secretary to the British War Cabinet from 1939 to 1946 when he joined the BBC as Controller of the European Services. He later became the Director of Overseas Services before taking on the post of Chairman of the Board of Governors. |
