Welcome to the new Lord’s Taverners and Lady Taverners Golf Society

The aim of The Lord’s Taverners and The Lady Taverners Golf Society is to allow Members who are golfers to play together for fun and in competition, rather than for fundraising.

We are honoured to welcome Peter Alliss as the inaugural President of the Golf Society, with Ken New and Marion Buckle as joint Captains of the Society.

Over the years we have developed a close and friendly relationship with the prestigious Denham Golf Club in Buckinghamshire, this year celebrating its centenary (to visit the Club's website please click here). We are grateful to the Club and its Members in agreeing to a special link which provides Taverners Golf Society members unique access to the Club and Course and which will provide us with a ‘home’ course for certain Society matches.

First win of the season for the Taverners

A delightful day at Richmond Golf Club saw a victory for The Lord’s Taverners in the annual triangular match against The Stage Golf Society and The XL Club on 14 April.

The team, pumped up by non-playing captain Richard Kershaw, who sped around the course in a buggy doing his best impression of Seve Ballesteros when he captained the 1997 Ryder Cup team, accumulated 260 stableford points against 253 for the XL Club and 233 for The Stage. John Baddelly addressed the lunch in his usual quiet and understated fashion before finding himself in competition with the Ladies from Richmond and Royal Mid Surrey – it’s not often that you see John lost for words! The Taverners team was Richard Kershaw (non playing), Ken New, Peter Edwards, David Lynes, Colin Vidler, Eric Austin, Colin Freedman, Mark Cordy and the irrepressible (except when faced with the Ladies of Richmond and Royal Mid Surrey) John Baddelly.

...closely followed by a narrow defeat at the Berkshire

The Taverners Golfing Society Foursomes match against the XL Club at the Berkshire took place on 31 May in good conditions, despite coinciding with a break in the fine spell we had all been enjoying. The result, however, was less favourable!

After taking a lead into lunch the Taverners team capitulated and were beaten into second place (there are no losers in such a friendly match!). Hopefully, the XL Club will honour this win by getting the trophy engraved, which they failed to do last year; I can only assume victory does not mean as much to a Society with such a long fixture list! The Taverners man of the match was Vince Parker who remained undefeated.

I would like to thank the Berkshire for its hospitality and Tony Colbeck for getting his team together. I trust we will find him in better health next year and not just turning up to give an arousing lunchtime team talk. This is a truly wonderful match played over two magnificent courses so it would be great to see other Society Members putting their name down to play next year.

Here are the details of other matches later this year. Do please contact the organiser if you would like to take part in any of them.
