Newmarket Race Day

Over 160 adventurous Lord’s and Lady Taverners and their guests braved monsoon downpours to attend the Darley July Cup at Newmarket Racecourse on 14th July.  Ditching wellington boots and umbrellas at the door of The Lord’s Taverners Marquee, they settled in for an afternoon of lunch and racing.  We were lucky to have President Chris Cowdrey as our MC and some of Racing’s eminent celebrities as our guests.  In addition, Sue Upson, Head Teacher of Hillside Special School had driven the school’s new Lord’s Taverners mini bus to the racecourse and left it on prominent display in the course grounds.  Bob Young, East Anglia Regional Chairman, was delighted to be joined by Chris, Michael Holding (or ‘Whispering Death’ as he was known by his cricketing opposition) and Julian Wilson, B.B.C-TV Racing Correspondent for many years, to present the mini bus to Sue and her school.  In return she brought a handmade card from her pupils and thanked The Lord’s and Lady Taverners for the huge difference the bus would make to their school.

Frankie Dettori crossed the muddy race track to join us, as did Sir Michael Stoute.  Both chatted to Julian Wilson, our ‘resident tipster,’ and were kind enough to give us a few tips on the coming races.  The gist of these seemed to be ‘throw away the form book and look for fins and webbed feet’ but they also gave us a few names of horses that might survive the very heavy going.

The mood was set by loud cheers from our sponsors, Leanne and Mike West of BeStrategic, sales, marketing and finance consultants who won well in the first race and then from their table again when an outsider won the Darley Cup. This race also brought success for another lucky winner who had drawn the winning horse and so won the fantastic prize in the Essex Racing Club Sweepstake (kindly donated by Barry and Joan Root).  The top prize in our raffle was 4 tickets to Edgebaston which the winner, Dave Brown, greeted with another resounding cheer (it was noticeable how nice his friends were being to him after his win!).  Many people also left with wonderful prizes from the silent auction under their arms.

The rain was unrelenting but we were fortunate to have a marquee very close to the course and almost on the finishing line so all the entertainment could be enjoyed without venturing too far.  Particular thanks to our generous event and sweepstake sponsors, to Chris Cowdrey and Julian Wilson for doing the talking, to Nigel Fenn and his family for their tireless work throughout the day and to the many celebrities who visited us.

Judging by the emails afterwards, the event was a great success and we are already thinking of next year.  The event raised about c.£7,500 (accounts to be finalised) for The Lord’s Taverners. There were some good photographs taken on the day and these are possible to view and purchase using the following link You will need to put in the client password:  taverners Guann-Yeu Chin,  our photographer has priced the photographs very competitively and is kindly donating 50p from each photograph sold to The Lord's Taverners.
