Goodwood Cricket and Lunch

This event was held on 30 Jul 2013

The end of July saw some 90 Taverners and friends gather for the first day of Glorious Goodwood which was kindly sponsored by The Racing Post, Rita Sen Solicitors and Spirit FM.

After what the forecasters had assured us was the longest warm spell for 7 years, the weather on the day was anything but glorious; driving rain and mist obscuring the wonderful views across the course and the South Downs.

Spirits could not be dampened however, and a great afternoon of good company, good food and exciting racing was enjoyed by all.

Chris Oldham, organiser of the day, welcomed everyone with a few words followed by Chris Cowdray, who summed up the work of the Taverners and the reason for us all being there.

After the racing we had planned a cricket match where the Lords Taverners X1 were to have played the Earl of March’s racing XI in front of the beautiful Goodwood House. However, whilst the rain had stopped by mid afternoon, the pitch was too wet and regretfully we had to abandon the game.

Those guests who were concerned that they might miss Henry Kelly’s wonderful cricket commentary need not have feared as he was happy to entertain us all during the afternoon tea.

We are looking to repeat the day again next year so please do let us know if you would be interested in joining us for the Sport of Kings and the King of Sports!
