York CC crowned Lady Taverners T20 champions at inaugural Lord's Taverners Golf Classic
York CC crowned Lady Taverners T20 champions
80 cricketers, lots of supporters, 30 golfers, 28 degrees, clear blue skies, surrounded by mountains and a sponsor who produced fantastic canned alcoholic drinks - what more could the Taverners and their guests want whilst raising money for those children with special needs that so need a sporting chance?
It was the fifth Lady Taverners cricket tournament and the 'first' Lord’s Taverners Golf Classic, which ran alongside each other at La Manga Club, Murcia, Spain, both events being sponsored by 'Kiss Mix' the provider of the most delicious mixed canned drinks such as vodka & orange, gin & tonic, vodka energy drink, vodka cranberry, margarita and many more flavours.
Kiss Mix was to be found everywhere, thanks to the generosity of our sponsor Robert Millar from Kiss Mix. Kiss Mix was welcomed on the golf course which improved some players scores, others sadly not. Evening receptions and the Gala Dinner were awash with Kiss Mix as well as being enjoyed at the cricket tournament!
The two day cricket tournament included La Manga CC, Switzerland Select XI, UK United Asians, from Norway, Nations CC, Sentrum CC and Kolas CC as well as Wimbledon who were winners of the ECB Kingfisher Beer cup and York, winners of the ECB National Club Cup.
The winners of the two day tournament were York and one of their prizes was to play against a Taverners/Legends team on the Monday, where visitors came from afar to join all the golfers and local residents to watch the match.
Cricket is growing rapidly in Spain thanks to this event, The Lord’s Taverners, the support of La Manga club and the ECB and I was very proud to hear that from five years ago when they had five cricket teams in Spain they now have 63 flourishing clubs and more clubs to open shortly.
The two day Lord’s Taverners Golf Classic was won by Phil Defreitas, a retired English cricketer who played first class cricket for Leicestershire, Lancashire and Derbyshire. Runner-up was Neal Radford, a former England cricketer who appeared in three Tests and six ODIs for England. Third was our own Mike Gatting who played a great two days of golf as well as supporting the cricket.
The winning team for the golf was Sue Simons, Gus Mackay and Gareth Batty and they had a 'ghost' player (due to being one team member short) who was Phil Defreitas!
Kiss Mix provided a host of trophies for the winning team and individual winners as well as donating golf bags, towels, rucksacks and much more.
