Lord's Taverners XI victorious at Goodwood House
Lord's Taverners XI v Lord March's Racing XI
Goodwood House - Tuesday 29 July
Lord's Taverners XI 179 AO (19.2 overs)
Lord March's Racing XI 173/7 (20 overs)
Lord's Taverners won by six runs
The Taverners won a good toss but were in deep trouble at 34 for 4 after 7 overs with Mike Bushell, Andy Caddick, Mike Tredgett and JP Doyle all falling cheaply. Steve Kirby, opening the batting now that his bowling career has had to end through injury, opened the batting for probably the first time in his life and contributed a smart 21 but the innings was rescued by Gus Mackay who struck 79 with 6 sixes and 8 fours and was ably supported by Min Patel, Keith O’Keefe, Neil Smith, Raj Maru and Paul Prichard who struck 34 off 15 balls to enable the Taverners to achieve a formidable total of 179.
Andy Caddick and Keith O’Keefe shared the new ball with Keith the more likely wicket taker as the opposition hadn’t seen anybody quite like him before, but 110 for 1 after 11 overs, the Racing XI looked well on course for victory, but Raj Maru and Min Patel with some canny left arm bowling, disposed of Oliver Bell (25), Oliver Fowlston (34) and, most impressively, Johnno Spence (59) as the opposition fell.
Tension rose with 29 required from 3 overs and ultimately came to 7 off the last ball, but Mike Tredgett bowled the last over taking 2 for 7 to leave the Taverners winners by 6 runs.
The highlight of the Racing XI’s innings was a straight drive for 4 and a pick-up for 6 off Andy Caddick who suggest that the batsman might need a helmet for the next ball.
