Taverners celebrate 65th anniversary in Antigua

To celebrate the Lord’s Taverners 65th anniversary, a star studded line-up of current and former professionals and celebrities led a cricket tour to Antigua and Barbuda. The Lord’s Taverners, which included personalities such as McBusted’s Harry Judd, BBC presenter Mark Chapman and former England Cricket Captain Mike Gatting, won their T20 match against the Sir Viv Richards XI before donating cricket kit to a local project as part of the Lord’s Taverners new kit recycling scheme.

In a match staged at The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the Lord’s Taverners XI defeated the team managed by the ‘master blaster’ after a man of the match performance from Essex all-rounder Ryan Ten Doeschate. The charity XI scored 164 /6 with the hosts managing only 158/9 in reply. Highlights included Courtney Walsh getting the wicket of Harry Judd and Ten Doeschate’s unbeaten 41 from just 25 balls in a cross-generational match in support of the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity.

Harry Judd commented after the game: “I loved it, it was an amazing experience. It was quite surreal keeping to Andy Caddick having grown up watching him play – he still has a lovely action. I enjoyed facing Sir Viv Richard’s son as well – he was quick but came nicely on to the bat. It was great to face Courtney Walsh until he got me out but there’s no shame in that!”

The tour party also donated sports kit as part of the recently launched Lord’s Taverners kit recycling scheme, which aims to enable young people to partake in sport and remove one of the key barriers for sports participation.

The Lord’s Taverners sports kit recycling scheme collects unwanted cricket, rugby and football kit to give to young people in the UK and abroad. The scheme is just one of many different programmes and initiatives that the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity offers to ensure that disadvantaged and disabled people get a sporting chance.

Sir Viv Richards stated: “Senator Colin James, in the ministry of sport will be circulating the kit and I will make sure it is heading in the right direction, I'm just looking forward to seeing the smiles on some of these kids’ faces with the donation from the Lord's Taverners Kit Recycling scheme. We are such a vibrant nation and donations like this go very far within our community so I would just like to thank the Lord's Taverners again for their support.”

Cherrie Osborne, Director of Tourism, UK & Europe - Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority said: “The people of Antigua and Barbuda are really passionate about cricket and we believe it’s the best place in the world for enthusiasts to indulge in their love of the sport. We were thrilled to host the Lord’s Taverners and welcome cricketing legends and fans alike to the gem of the Caribbean for the Anniversary Tour. The funds raised by the Lord’s Taverners will go a long way to supporting worthy local projects.”
