Bowl off drama at Lady Tavs T20 finals

St Cross Symondians CC and J&G Meakin CC were respective winners of the 2016 Lady Taverners U13 and U15 Club T20 competitions after two days of finals action last week.

The U13 and U15 finals, which took place on 27 and 28 July at Denby CC in Derbyshire, featured some standout individual performances and great cricket throughout.

In Tuesday's U13 fixtures, J&G Meakin CC, Leigh CC, Spencer CC and St Cross Symondians CC battled it out for the competition honours.

Overcast conditions early on did nothing to dampen the spirit of all four teams, or the enthusiastic crowd cheering on from the beyond the boundary.

The semi-finals saw Spencer CC beat Leigh CC by eight wickets to book their place in the decider and St Cross Symondians CC emerge as winners by 26 runs against J&G Meakin CC.

Winchester side St Cross Symondians were then triumphant in the final with a 50-run victory over Spencer CC, thanks in part to an outstanding innings of 87 from Lucia Kendall.

Top performances on the day included that of Spencer's Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones, who scored 92 runs across all games without losing her wicket, and Kendall, who posted 42 in the semi-final before her match-winning contribution in the final.

The second day of the competition saw the U15 teams of Hayes CC, J&G Meakin CC, North Devon Tarka CC and Sessay CC take to the field to compete for the T20 title.

However, rain thwarted the competition and the final was decided via a bowl-off.

All four sides were able to get some cricket in early in the day but when the rain came midway through the first matches, the results saw J&G Meakin CC and Sessay CC advance to the final at the expense of Hayes CC and last year’s champions, North Devon Tarka CC.

With the inclement weather continuing to interrupt play, the decision was taken to decide the final winners in a bowl-off.

The bowl-off was a tense affair, with nerves showing on both sides. However, J&G Meakin captain Molly Gwynne was the hero as she hit the stumps in sudden death to secure victory for her side.
