Super 1s set for Lord's showdown

Nearly 80 disabled young people, representing eight boroughs from across the capital are set to compete at cricket’s most iconic venue, Lord’s, this week (18 October).

Over the last nine months, four leagues have run across London (North, South, East and West), with each area hosting three competition days, where teams competed against their local rivals. The results from all three days were added together, and the top two teams from each league have qualified for the Super 1s finals at the home of cricket where they have a chance of being crowned Super 1s champions.

Super 1s, which was launched nationally earlier this year following the success seen in London, delivers weekly cricket sessions within community environments. It helps participants to develop their physical fitness as well as confidence, independence, self-esteem and communication skills. The programme gives disabled young people the chance to compete against their peers, enjoy the benefits of sport and live a more active life. To make the programme self-reliant and sustainable, local people are trained to become qualified coaches and the hubs become a real asset to the community.

Super 1s sessions are delivered across the capital in partnership with Essex, Kent, Middlesex and Surrey County Cricket Boards, a partnership that has remained at the core of the programme delivery since 2013.

The programme benefits significantly from the support of the Berkeley Foundation, Sport England and the ECB. Now active in all 32 London boroughs, Super 1s is now being taken to young people outside of the capital. Further support from the Berkeley Foundation has helped establish hubs in Warwickshire, and the programme is also being delivered in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Norfolk, Sussex, Scotland, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire, with activity set to start in Durham and Somerset in the coming months.
