London 2012 heroes provide fitting end to Taverners year
Seb Coe, the main man behind the spectacular London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, and Paralympic Gold medallist Mickey Bushell starred at this year’s Lord’s Taverners Christmas Lunch, which yet again saw over 1,000 guests in the Great Room at the Grosvenor House enjoy an afternoon of fundraising.
Chairman of the British Olympic Association, Seb Coe joined BBC presenter John Inverdale on stage to open proceedings, reviewing what was an incredible summer of sport before Taverners ambassador Mickey Bushell entered the stage to a well-deserved standing ovation following his amazing Paralympic success and helped the Taverners to raise over £100,000.
The Taverners were also lucky to have a number of other Olympic and Paralympic guests attend on the day to help provide a fitting end to 2012, including Olympic Equestrian Silver medallist Tina Cook and Paralympic Table Tennis medallists Will Bayley and Ross Wilson, who said grace.
Guests were treated to words from young girls at Swanlea School in Tower Hamlets, who are seeing the benefits of the introduction of cricket in their area courtesy of The Lord’s Taverners recently launched ‘Wicketz’ programme. While a very grateful Diane Rochford, head teacher at JFK School, who has seen just how much of a difference the Taverners work can make, also said a few words. She has seen new sensory equipment installed and a minibus presented at her school in the last year. JFK School sits in the shadow of the Olympic Park and the new equipment for the pupils at the school is a prime example that the promise of a lasting legacy from Seb Coe and the London 2012 games, is coming to fruition.
The afternoon was then brought to a close, after the always successful auction, by comedian Miles Jupp, who was in great form and ensured everyone left in good spirits.
Many thanks to all of our Members, supporters and their guests for helping change the lives of disadvantaged or disabled youngsters across the UK in 2012.
