Brian Johnston Memorial Trust Dinner
Annual Johnners Club Dinner October 2013
The last twelve months have seen the sad loss of the two most important figures in the history of BJMT. CMJ’s untimely death last December was followed only a few weeks ago by that of Pauline Johnston, Brian’s widow, a few months after her 90th birthday. Both of them were instrumental in setting up the Trust in 1995 and whilst the Annual Dinner at Lords in October took the form of a moving tribute to CMJ, we also remembered Pauline.
A near hurricane the night before did not prevent any of the speakers and guests arriving at Lord’s in time, many of whom had travelled considerable distances to be there. The evening, expertly hosted by Chairman of the Trust Jo Rice, opened with some recorded highlights of CMJ which must have been especially moving for his widow Judy and the Martin-Jenkins family table. Barry Johnston gave a fond and affection tribute to his Mother before handing over to Vic Marks, just a few days before he departed for Australia with the TMS Team. Vic gave a superb tribute, enthralling us with some amusing and personal memories of CMJ.
David Graveney and Peter Such from the ECB gave a brief summary of the spin bowling and cricket scholarship programmes which the Trust continues to support before presenting awards to two of the most promising young cricketers in the country – Bradley Taylor of Hampshire, and Craig Miles of Gloucestershire, who is already making a name for himself in their 1st team.
Christ Cowdrey, President of the Lord’s Taverners, recalled some of the numerous contributions CMJ had made to the Taverners over many years before he and Chairman Tom Rodwell presented a cheque for £15,000 from the Taverners to BJMT which was graciously accepted by Barry.
The formalities concluded with some personal recollections by Christopher’s brother Tim as well as a most entertaining reprise of the double act of their Cambridge Footlights days. What an act they could have been had cricket not intervened!
Our thanks as always to ‘Durders’ for yet another successful auction and to Judy for drawing the raffle, and not least to Francesca and the Events Team at the Taverners office for organising the event so brilliantly. A truly memorable evening which did justice to a truly great man.
