Lord’s Taverners 155 for 7 20 overs

Lord March’s Racing XI 156 for 7 20 overs

Lord March’s Racing XI won by 3 wickets

The Taverners chose to bat on a sunny but chilly evening following a disastrous betting day at the races when we were privileged to watch the First Day of Glorious Goodwood. All the Taverners contributed, Jon Desborough playing the anchor role whilst watching Matthew Boyce (22), Jason Dodd (27), Paul Prichard (26) score freely at the other end. Our two comedians, Andy Parsons and Andy Zaltzman made their debut and both scored splendidly, but their speed between the wickets left something to be desired.

In reply Raj Maru took a splendid slip catch first ball off Joey Benjamin, which must be something of a Taverners record, but Marcus Armytage, the former Grand National wining jockey, and James Over, both batted well for 31 before succumbing to Andy Zaltzman’s cunning slower ball. Marcus Townend and Simon Clare kept the score moving, but wickets fell at regular intervals and the match was on a knife-edge for the whole innings, culminating with the opposition requiring 9 off the last over. Raj Maru cleaned bowled Ed Dunlop, the opposition Captain, off the first ball, but Nick Gifford hit an almighty 6 to virtually settle the game, although the winning run was only scored off the last ball of the match to the immense delight of Lord March’s Racing XI.

In short, a splendid T20 game with everyone contributing and just the sort of result we like to have in a match played in a friendly spirit but competitively.
