The Goodies Lord’s Taverners XI v Enstone CC

This event was held on 24 Jun 2012

Venue: Enstone CC, Chipping Norton

Enstone CC: 170-6
The Lord's Taverners: 156 all out

Heavy rain, floods and flood warnings, not the best forecast for the day. An auspicious run up to the Taverners visit to Enstone in Oxfordshire. All the planning could, literally, have gone down the drain!

Churchillian fortitude bought all to the lunch and despite a shower, Lo, the winds drove the clouds away and the sun put its hat on. Game on. We did however agree to a 30 over a side game, due partly to the excellent lunch and not the weather!

The Taverners rippled with cricketing talent and also from their hefty lunch, electing to field first. Sir Patrick Stewart { Hon Capt of Enstone} gave his side a Shakespearian motivational talk, before he had to leave, and we did feel better for it, if not slightly intimidated, god he’s a good actor......

Neil Smith led Mike Tredgett, Neil Carter, Paul Aldred, Brian Viner, Charlie Ross, Simon Francis, Chris White, Jonnie Irwin, Graham Rose and Enstone’s young man Daniel Wilson to the field. ‘Fingers’ Fingleton gracefully and eloquently described proceedings, whilst Rebecca Ting scored. Law and order was upheld by a formidable trio - MJK Smith, Bob Barber and John Price.

Steady start, then a breakthrough with the dismissal of Will Speke and then the run out of David Bussey, who had had a very large lunch and relied on his friend [?!] Simon Francis to be slightly more generous than he was! David Stevens went for a quicker than usual 18 and then a stand of 62 between Steve Wilson {49} and Piers Myatt {48} in better than even time, and with cameo knocks from Pete and Kevin Anthony produced a final total of 170-6. Brian Viner, Graham Rose, Neil Carter and Chris White were among the wickets.

The Taverners response was disconcerting in its swiftness. Neil Carter scoring 24 from 13 balls but once he had departed Mike Tredgett { 25} and Chris White{11} took a more sedate approach in order to reach the target. A sudden injection of pace by Paul Aldred {59 off 32 balls} made things interesting and with Graham Rose and Neil Smith both scoring freely things were going the Taverners way. But with some excellent fielding and Enstone holding their catches (always a first time for everything!) the Taverners fell agonisingly 14 runs short at 156 all out. What a good game in the sunshine.Pete Anthony returning figures of 2 for 7 off 4 overs and ‘Ned’ Speke 4 for 49 off 6.

With 11 sixes a further £220 was raised from our sponsors of the 6 competition and with Charlie Ross conducting the auction of generously donated items with such aplomb significant sums were raised for the Charities.

Our thanks are extended to the Taverners side and to all who were involved in the organisation, sponsorship and running of the event. With one win each next year should be well contested.

It should be noted that the Taverners conceded 18 byes, with Neil Smith blaming the organiser for not engaging a wicket keeper…tools and blame come to mind!
