Debbie McGee named new Lady Taverners President

We are delighted to announce that Debbie McGee has accepted our invitation to be the next President of the Lady Taverners, succeeding Lesley Garrett CBE who has enjoyed a successful two years in the role.

As one of the UK’s best-loved entertainers, Debbie has been on our TV screens for more than four decades performing with magician Paul Daniels on his popular BBC show that ran for 15 years and regularly attracted audiences of 15 million. The duo married in 1988 and the trailblazing Debbie went on to become one of the first female members of The Magic Circle three years later and in 2017, was honoured by the organisation for ‘services to British magic’.

In recent years, Debbie has been a regular on TV in shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and she also presents her own radio show.

On her upcoming role, Debbie McGee said: “I am immensely proud to be the President of the Lady Taverners and to support the fantastic work to enhance the lives of disadvantaged and disabled young people through sport and recreation. I am honoured to follow in the footsteps of all the great Presidents before me, including Lesley Garrett, who served with such distinction.

Lady Taverners Chairman Chrissie Walker-Hebborn added: “We are deeply grateful to our outgoing President Lesley Garrett who has been an outstanding President and Ambassador. The Lady Taverners could not be more delighted to announce that Debbie McGee has agreed to become our President.

“Debbie is a household name and her presence and experience will be invaluable as we seek to expand our support of disadvantaged and disabled young people during her Presidency."

Super 1s and Wicketz delivery will need to be reflective of the relevant local tier system in place. Table Cricket will continue to take place within educational settings but must do so under the policy and procedures that the school or college has in place within schools and online.

In the current climate, we are unable to deliver competitions but this may change over the coming weeks and months. We will be in a position to react to this as soon as restrictions allow.

During the last month, most Super 1s and Wicketz weekly sessions have been taking place on zoom but the news that enables us to start physical activity again is a very welcome development ahead of the Christmas period.
