The 20th Lord’s Taverners Dinner and Balloon Debate took place in December in the glorious surroundings of the Long Room at Lord’s. There was not a spare seat to be had as 200 members and guests enjoyed a fine reception and meal in anticipation of the main event, the Balloon Debate. This is where four brave speakers champion the merits of their sporting hero, with the audience voting to eject their least favourite in a metaphorically sinking hot air balloon.
The four fine speakers were James Troughton captain of county champions Warwickshire, Daniel Norcross, lead commentator of Test Match Sofa, comedian and broadcaster Nick Hancock and UKIP leader Nigel Farage. The final two fighting out a memorable debate were Hancock’s hilarious ‘Roy Race of the Melchester Rovers’ and Farage’s passionate and witty speech in support of the great C.B.Fry. Hancock won the Debate where one member was heard to comment that Farage won’t get anywhere near this many votes from this audience in a general election!
The evening raised a fantastic £20,000 for the charity. Well done to all involved.
