Sue Perkins brings festive cheer to Lady Taverners
8 Northumberland, the grand hotel on Northumberland Avenue, played host to the annual Lady Taverners Christmas Lunch.
The event signifies the beginning of the festive season for many guests and what better way to kick things off than with some Christmas shopping at the stalls laid out at the beautiful venue. Ladies browsed along rails of clothes, hats, books and fabulous jewellery and also enjoyed a surprise gift from the ‘lucky dip’ and a bargain or two at the ‘Bring and Buy’ stall.
After the Champagne and shopping (a perfect combination!) guests entered the spectacular Ball Room and proceedings began with some wonderful singing from the young but superb choir from John Ruskin Primary School in Camberwell. The introduced the songs themselves which included ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ and the finale saw guests join in with a lively rendition of ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’.
Once the singing had faded host Angela Rippon took to the stage to introduce the first speaker, TV personality Sue Perkins who wowed the audience with tales of her childhood and career. Crackers ‘popped’ and lunch was served followed by a very successful auction presented by Angela. The final speaker, poet Pam Ayres, entertained guests with amusing anecdotes about husbands and life, a fantastic ending to a wonderful event.
£18,000 was raised on the day, another amazing result for The Lady Taverners who always raise more than just a smile. With thanks to Chairman Carole Garner and her Committee for all their hard work.
The Lady Taverners would like to wish all their supporters a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
