Welsh sporting legends Tee-off in aid of sporting charity Lord’s Taverners
Lord’s Taverners Wales held its annual Golf Day at The Royal Porthcawl Golf Club on 27th September. The event is held every year in memory of ex-Chairman of the Wales region Ian Spratling who passed away in 2001.
The Lord’s Taverners is the official charity of recreational cricket and the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity. Given those cricketing connections it was fitting to have a former Glamorgan and England Cricket Captain present, Tony Lewis CBE. Tony is president of Lord’s Taverners Wales and he was joined in his team by another former England Cricketer, Peter Walker. Glamorgan Cricket legend, Don Shepherd and current Glamorgan and former England A player, Dean Cosker also joined Tony in his star studded team.
There were other sporting celebrities present including former Wales rugby internationals and British Lions, Bob Norster and Brynmor Williams. All were present to help raise funds for the sporting charity.
As part of the post-golf entertainment Bob Norster, Brynmor Williams and Peter Walker contributed to a sporting question and answer session compered by Chairman of the Lord’s Taverners Wales, Ed Meggitt.
Pupils at the special needs residential school, Ysgol Ty Coch in Pontypridd, were also at the event earlier in the day to be formally presented with their specially-adapted Taverners minibus.
The bus, worth more than £35,000, was presented to the children by the President of Lord’s Taverners Wales, Tony Lewis and by the chairman, Ed Meggitt.
Speaking of the golf day Chairman Ed Meggitt said: “It was a great honour to once again dedicate our annual golf day to the memory of Ian Spratling. Ian was a very special man who held the charity very close to his heart.
“The day itself was wonderful and it was great to see so many of our supporters turn out for the event. The Royal Porthcawl Golf Club is one of the best courses in Wales, with great views across the bay and we are privileged to hold our event there.”
