Lord's Taverners and Berkeley Foundation renew award-winning partnership with £600,000 commitment to Super 1s

Three-year partnership will support the continued delivery and development of Super 1s for young people with disabilities across the UK.

Lord’s Taverners is delighted to announce the renewal of its award-winning partnership with Berkeley Foundation, with a new £600,000 commitment over the next three years to support the charity’s Super 1s disability cricket programme and the SEND School programme.

The renewed partnership, which takes the investment from Berkeley Foundation in the programme since its introduction in 2013 to over £3m, will fund the delivery of Super 1s in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Sussex and Warwickshire for the next three years, helping to ensure that young people with disabilities can continue to access regular, free and inclusive cricket within their local communities.

Super 1s provides young people with disabilities opportunities to play cricket in a safe and supportive environment, while developing confidence, independence, teamwork and social connections. Sessions are adapted to meet the needs of participants, ensuring that young people can take part in the game in a way that works for them.

The programme has grown from being delivered to 60 young people across London in 2014, to well over 2,000 participants across a network of community hubs in every English county, Scotland and Wales today. Super 1s participants continue to report increased levels confidence, activity and feelings of inclusion following engagement with the programme.

The renewed funding from Berkeley Foundation will enable Lord’s Taverners to build on this progress over the next three years, supporting the continued delivery of high-quality local sessions while further developing opportunities for young people to progress through cricket and develop skills that can benefit them beyond the sport.

The partnership builds on a relationship between Berkeley Foundation and Lord’s Taverners which has supported the charity’s disability cricket work for more than a decade. Berkeley Foundation’s previous funding, alongside support from local authorities in each delivery area, has played an important role in the development and national expansion of Super 1s.

Lord’s Taverners CEO, Mark Curtin, said: “Berkeley Foundation has been a hugely important partner in the development of Super 1s for more than a decade, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued commitment to the programme. This renewed investment will allow us to build on the significant progress we have made together and ensure more young people with a disability can experience the benefits of regular, inclusive cricket in their local communities.

“We look forward to continuing to work with Berkeley Foundation over the next three years to ensure even more young people are inspired, empowered and included through cricket.”

Piers Clanford, Chairman of Berkeley Foundation and Chief Operating Officer at Berkeley Group, added:

“We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Lord’s Taverners, supporting the delivery of the Super 1s programme. Over the years, we have seen first-hand the life-changing impact it has for young people with disabilities. Through cricket, participants build confidence, independence, friendships and a genuine sense of belonging.

The success of Super 1s is testament to the dedication of everyone involved and the power of creating opportunities where every young person can thrive.”
