2013 will be a big year for the Surrey Region, with more members on our Committee including our new President, Ian Pay, and some big developments in the pipeline.  The first thing to mention is our new Business Partners’ Scheme.  It’s a link-up with businesses in our area, offering guaranteed places at all our big events throughout the year, and this year we have more events than ever before.  The basic package will cost around £6,000, and can be tailored to meet specific requirements.  If any of you know a company, large or small, in the Surrey area which might be interested in joining the scheme, please let me know.

Our programme of events.

Shooting at Gosterwood. 

This is a really terrific day out, a sixty bird Clay Pigeon morning followed by a superb lunch prepared by Master Chef of Great Britain, Bill Bryce on Wednesday May 29th. The simulated game bird morning on the Gosterwood Estate near Dorking was almost over-subscribed last year, so please book early.  We have kept the cost of the day at £100.  This includes all the clays, bacon sandwiches & coffee on arrival, and half a bottle of wine is included with the lunch.

The Guildford Cricket Festival. 

We are taking a marquee at Guildford to watch Surrey v Warwickshire on Friday June 7th.  This will be a Club Event with no fundraising beginning with morning coffee, another lunch prepared for us by Bill Bryce (an ardent supporter) with wine and then afternoon tea.  And, Chris Adams, Surrey’s manager and long-time Lord’s Taverner, will bring the players over to meet our guests.  All for just £100.


Harry Secombe Golf Day.

To be held at Effingham Golf Club again where we have been made most welcome for the past three years, this year it will be on Wednesday July 10th. Teams of four are invited (or could be a team of three for the same price, but to include a celebrity) for a package price of £400 per team. This includes an excellent lunch in the clubhouse along with prize giving and celebrity speaker and all the usual Lord’s Taverners trimmings.

The Lord’s Taverners v Yankee Wanderers.

This is a cricket matched being arranged by Mike Gatting and the principles of the Yankee Wanderers to be played at Oxted CC on Tuesday July 16th.  Their association  with the Taverners goes back some twelve years.  The team is run by Phil Trainer and Mike Greathead who are sponsoring the event and they have pledged funds for two minibuses and ten sports wheelchairs.  This will be a full-scale turn-out of famous players and celebrities.  Prices have not yet been fixed for the lunch, but I will let you know.

Brooklands Dinner.

Hosted by Lord’s Taverners President Chris Cowdrey, the Brooklands Dinner will be held on Saturday September 7th.  We did hold a very successful event at Brooklands in 2007 to mark their Centenary and it’ll be good to revisit such a special part of British motor racing and aviation history. Again, we will have a champagne reception under the wings of Concorde, open-top car rides around the banked track, celebrity speakers and guests, dinner in the newly refurbished Chequered Flag Dining Room and the museum will be open, free of charge, to our guests to visit earlier in the evening, which will start at 6.00pm.  The cost will be around £100 per head.

The President’s Ball.

Hosted by Chris Cowdrey, once more, the ball has been scheduled for Saturday November 16th at Wentworth Golf Club.  We didn’t hold the Ball last year, and many people have asked us are we going to do it again?  Which is very encouraging!  Wentworth is such a special setting for any event and they do us really proud with their food, wines and attention to detail.  There will be celebrities, special guest speakers, entertainments and dancing.  Price to be advised.

We will also endeavour to arrange a Club Evening during the course of the year at The Oval cricket ground, with the chance to meet and mingle with some of the Surrey County Cricketers.

I mentioned our new President earlier and we are delighted to have Ian Pay on board who will lend his vast experience and masses of enthusiasm to the role.  Ian took over from Tony Vickers at the end of last year.  Unfortunately, Tony has been unwell recently, but the prognosis is good.  We thank him for all he has done for Surrey over the years, wish him well and hope he makes a full recovery.
