Ormskirk and Brighton take indoor honours
Ormskirk Grammar School and Brighton College were both crowned national champions after winning their national finals of The Lady Taverners Indoor School competitions.
The tournaments at Under-13 and Under-15 levels reached their conclusions on May 8 and 9 respectively at Lord’s, with Ormskirk coming out on top in the former and Brighton the latter.
Ormskirk, from West Lancashire, were hot favourites going into the Under-13 finals which added to the pressure on them, after their U15 team had narrowly missed out on a place at the home of cricket in the North Regional Finals.
Excellent batting performances ensured they managed an impressive 482 runs in their four matches but their bowling was the key, the highlight being Lucy Staunton-Turner performance taking an amazing five wickets in five balls to leave the opposition stunned as Ormskirk celebrated the U13s title.
The opposition, entering through the other regions, put up a valiant effort on the day but Godolphin and Latymer (Middlesex), Parkstone (Dorset), Abberley Hall (Worcestershire) and Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr (Wales) shared the further four places on a great day of cricket in the Under-13 finals.
U15 champions Brighton, who have visited Lord’s in this competition on many occasions now, were also undefeated on the day but had great opposition in Ilkley Grammar (Yorkshire) and Tudor Grange (Warwickshire), who finished second and third respectively.
The other two finalists were Millfield (Somerset) and Basseleg (Wales), who forced a tied game early on - an encounter that epitomised the spirit and type of cricket on display during the entire tournament.
This year was the 10th competition to be funded by The Lady Taverners and fittingly 2013 boasted an increase of 30% for entries across England and Wales, with 750 school teams taking part in each age group. A great sign for cricket and women’s sport that these participation numbers continue to improve at such a rate.
England stars Charlotte Edwards and Holly Colvin were both in attendance at the national finals and commented how much the standard has come on in recent years. You can’t help but think that more England stars will be coming out of this competition in the very near future.
