Lord’s Taverners Newmarket 2014
What was going on at the Lord’s Taverners Darley Cup Raceday at Newmarket this year? Amazingly the weather was benign – the heavens did not open continuously all day as in 2012 and it was warm rather than Timbuktu hot as in 2013. Judging by the noise and laughter, as much fun as ever.
East Anglia Lord’s were joined for lunch and an afternoon of racing by Lord’s and Lady Taverners from other regions including Norfolk, Essex, London and Surrey. We had a wonderful, colourful crowd of guests, many of whom are regulars and already asking for dates for next year! We even had a Porsche join us for the afternoon courtesy of Stuart Lee of Porsche Centre Cambridge, who also donated a prize for our silent auction.
Although Julian Wilson who died earlier this year was much missed, Barry Root our resident racing expert did a wonderful job of providing tips on the races and interviewing renowned trainers Edward Lynam and Sir Michael Stoute who came to visit the Taverner marquee. Our Marquee is in a wonderful situation with the outside terrace opening up onto the racecourse right beside the finishing post – the perfect spot for seeing all the action and being part of the cheering crowd. And cheer they did – especially as there appeared to be more than the usual number of winners, perhaps due to the insiders tip from Edward Lynam, whose horse Slade Power won the Darley Cap minutes after he had told us that it would! Particular thanks to him for sending the Taverners a very generous cheque to celebrate his win.
Our sweepstake prize given by Barry and Joan Root of Essex Racing Club was won, generously put up for auction by the winner and then won again by two bidders as Barry, the auctioneer, donated it twice. Thanks to all parties.
We look forward to seeing everyone again next year, and will publish the date as soon as we have it. Meanwhile thanks to all for helping us to raise a record sum to give young people a sporting chance.
