Catford youngsters benefit from new play equipment

Actress Trudie Goodwin, best known for her role in Police TV drama ‘The Bill’, joined representatives of the Lord’s Taverners, the Lady Taverners and the 100 Property Club in Catford, Lewisham, on 21 October to unveil a new playground with staff and pupils at Greenvale School.

Greenvale School is Lewisham’s community special school for 110 children and young people aged 11-19 who have severe and profound learning difficulties including those with an additional diagnosis of autism, and those with additional medical needs. Many pupils also have additional physical and sensory disabilities.

The new playground will give the schools pupils the opportunity to experience something they otherwise wouldn’t have access to in their local area. Many pupils have very challenging behaviours and the opportunity to exercise in this new facility will have a positive impact on their behaviour and learning. Being able to place a learning activity within the new recreation space will also encourage the children to interact and develop their learning skills further.

The installation of the new playground has been made possible thanks to generous support from the 100 Property Club, who made the Lord’s Taverners the beneficiary charity of their annual dinner and as a result, have donated £16,000 towards the new facility.

The chairman of the 100 Property Club, David Bowen, said: “We are delighted to have worked with the Lord’s Taverners to raise money for this worthwhile project. Whilst we have supported a number of charitable causes over the last 40 years, this is the first time that we have helped provide funding for a new playground facility. I’m sure that it will be extremely well used and provide a really positive impact on the lives of the pupils at Greenvale School for many years to come.”

Paul Robin, chief executive of the Lord’s Taverners, said: “The Lord's Taverners believes that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, regardless of ability or background. This outdoor play equipment will help the Greenvale pupils take part in exercise that reduces anxiety levels whilst improving their functionality at school on a daily basis. We are proud to support the staff, parents and young people of Greenvale School and would like to thank the 100 Property Club for their support.”
