Yorkshire stars present transport lifeline to youngsters
Pupils and staff at Ravenscliffe High School in Halifax had a day to remember last week as they travelled to Headingley to be presented with a new specially adapted minibus by the Yorkshire Cricket squad, including England stars Liam Plunkett, Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance.
The trio, along with other members of the squad, took time out from their pre-season preparations to meet pupils from the Halifax school that caters for a wide range of pupils with physical disabilities and special educational needs. The new specially adapted minibus is essential for enabling students access to the local community which is crucial in the development of the pupils' social skills. The visits will help pupils learn essential life skills for future independent living while also accessing sports and recreation facilities within their community.
This minibus has been made possible thanks to the support of players of the People's Postcode Lottery (PPL). Players of PPL play with their postcodes to win cash prizes while raising money for charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally, and their support of the Lord's Taverners has helped provide the new minibus for Ravenscliffe School.
Since 1976, the Lord's Taverners has placed over 1,150 accessible minibuses to schools across the UK. The iconic Lord's Taverners minibuses provide disadvantaged and disabled young people with the chance to engage with their local community by getting more access to the facilities on offer and build important life skills in the process.
Martin Moorman, Head Teacher at Ravenscliffe High School, said: "This new minibus will allow us to take our pupils out into the community and access many different recreational and social activities that would previously have not been available to them. The minibus is a transport lifeline for our school and we would like to say thank you to the Lord's Taverners for their help and to the players of Yorkshire who made it such a special day for some of our pupils."
Paul Robin, Chief Executive of the Lord's Taverners, added: "The Lord's Taverners believes that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, regardless of ability or background. This minibus will help the children to get out and enjoy new places and experiences in Yorkshire and beyond. We are proud to support the staff, parents and young people of Ravenscliffe School."
