Sessay and Porthill Park win Lady Taverners T20 competitions
The Lady Taverners U13 and U15 girls national club T20 competition culminated in two finals days held at Neston Cricket Club, near Liverpool earlier this month (1 and 2 August). The U13 competition saw Leyland take on Newport in the first semi-final, with Porthill Park playing Spencer in the second. The U15 finals day saw St Cross Symondians, J & G Meakin, Hayes and Sessay battle it out to be crowned national champions.
The first U13 semi-final was a tight, low scoring affair with Leyland setting Newport 100 to win, and despite a fine 47 from Sophia Smale, Newport came up 14 runs short. The second semi-final was another low scoring nail biter, with Porthill Park successfully defending their total of 107-6 by nine runs.
In the final, Porthill were bowled out for just 94, and Leyland looked to be cruising to victory with captain Katie Boardman scoring 41, before key wickets were lost, and some tight death bowling meant they finished on 91-4, just three runs short.
The first semi-final of the U15 competition saw St Cross Symondians set J & G Meakin 108 to win, a total that proved insufficient as captain Dominique Harrison scored 57, powering her side to a win with eight overs to spare. In the second semi-final, Sessay amassed an imposing 195-2 with captain Ophelia Watson hitting 89, and this proved too much for Hayes who could only muster 128-3 in reply.
The final saw another huge total set by Sessay as they posted 203-3 from their 20 overs, with Phoebe Turner and Jessica Woolston both scoring 71. In reply, J & G Meakin struggled to keep up with the required rate of over 10 runs an over, eventually being bowled out for 91. Sessay, who’s powerhouse batting line up had dominated the finals day, were deservedly crowned champions for the second successive season.
